A great poet who is still remembered by his worst fiction, Lady Chatterly

A neglected great. Read Bavarian Gentian and S*** of Death to sample him at his sublime best. Earlier poems are Snake, Humming Bird, In the Cities, Storm in the Black Forest, Piano. If you are not move by this small selection, you are not sensitive to his voice. He in poetry as in fiction a wonderful observer of the smallest detail, the very richness of life..

It sprouts when Kahu, a girl child, is born to the eldest grandson of the chief of the Maori in Whangara, New Zealand. Koro Apirana is disgusted; he needs a male child to continue the line of descent in the tribe. The years that follow further harden his heart toward his great-granddaughter in spite of the bottomless love and respect she showers upon him. The child's great-grandmother, the irreverent Nanny Flowers, proves to be the strength of this family; she nurtures the girl whom she knows holds the key to the future. The complex mixture of archetypal characters and cultural troubles make this novel appropriate for mature readers. Overt and sometimes violent racism is encountered and the tragic and bloody death of hundreds of beached whales may disturb younger readers. This story, originally published in New Zealand in 1987, is the basis of the recently released film by the same name. It's a tale rich in intense drama and sociological and cultural information. The two stories come together in powerful events that, as Rawiri says, have "all the cataclysmic power and grandeur of a Second Coming." With such esoteric material and many wandering plot threads, the story may prove difficult for some readers. But Ihimaera, best known for his adult books, combines breathtaking, poetic imagery, hilarious family dialogue, and scenes that beautifully juxtapose contemporary and ancient culture. "Whale Rider" is best known as the hit indie movie, winner of the Audience Award in the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. But the basis for that film was Witi Ihimaera's magical, lore-laden novel "Whale Rider," a bittersweet story about a Maori girl and her mysterious destiny.
The first great-grandchild of the Maori chief Koro Apirana is born... but a girl called Kahu, not the hoped-for boy, and soon her mother dies. Koro is upset, since only a male can carry on the line. He hopes for a destined chosen one to restore the Maori people, but his hopes are growing more and more futile. He starts teaching young boys about the old traditions, looking for the one who can "pull the sword from the stone."
Meanwhile, Kahu grows up into an inquisitive and sweet-natured eight-year-old. She loves her grandfather, but his bitterness over her not having been a boy has never really worn off. But one day, whales are found beaching themselves near the town where Kahu lives, and she hears their song. Searching for his old friend, master and rider, the oldest whale will find Kahu.
Few novels have the earnest simplicity that "Whale Rider" does. Ihimaera tackles subjects like tradition, sexism, faith, and of course the Maori culture. Not a lot of books and movies handle the Maori, who are the native people of New Zealand, and Ihimaera does an excellent job of conveying the creation myths, a handful of traditions, and the danger to it now (illustrated by Rawiri's journeys to Australia and Papua New Guinea).
Since the story is told through Kahu's biker uncle Rawiri, it takes us awhile to get to know Kahu. Similarly, the book is rather ordinary near the beginning, and the writing is too simple. But it grows in majesty, mystery and poetry as it progresses to its haunting, magical climax. Among the best parts of the book are the almost mythological sections devoted to an ancient whale who carried the Whale Rider long ago.
Kahu is a nebulous figure for much of the book, but flowers about halfway through, when Rawiri returns to New Zealand. Koro is an enigmatic character, crusty and grumpy, but is deeply concerned for his people and loves his granddaughter underneath it all. Nanny Flowers, who threatens to divorce Koro on at least a daily basis, is a wonderful character.
Sweet, beautifully written and memorable, "Whale Rider" is a memorable tale about traditions and culture, and about a little girl in white who rode a whale out to sea.

Movie v. Book

I read the book after seeing the movie, and found the book to be grittier. The book explains the myth of Paikea (Kahutia Te Rangi), the whale rider, in more detail, and explores Maori social issues in more depth. The story is also told from the perspective of someone other than Kahu (Pai).
The book stirred my imagination very differently than the movie. The movie had an ethereal quality that the book doesn't have as much, but the book explores the mystery surrounding the myth in a way that the movie doesn't begin to touch upon.
This book is immensely respectful of its characters, their failings, fears, and shortcomings, and despite the fact that the book centers on a founding myth, its humanity and compassion will move you. I highly recommend this engrossing, moving read, even to adults. In terms of an appropriate audience, children under ten or eleven might be upset by some of the scenes in the book, ranging from whaling practices to the consequences of an auto accident.

This is a beautiful work that fills one with the chills of destiny. I decided to read the book after seeing the movie, and though the movie was very good, the book gives a greater flavor of the Maori culture.
Koro Apirana is the chief of the tribe but he is disappointed when a girl first-born child comes instead of a boy. His eldest son's first wife dies, sealing the destiny for Kahutia Te Rangi to be the only heir to the chief. Her name also, is the one of the ancestor who was the first to come to their land, and the first whale rider. Koro's wife, Nanny Flowers gets their son to name her that, but afterward everyone says she's gone too far. Kahu proves to be a strong child, who loves her grandfather even though her love is not returned. When she hears the whales calling, destiny is calling her too. Witi Ihimaera's magical tale of Kahu brings a sense of the strength of the Maori culture to her readers. There is more to the book than the movie.

Vanity Fair and Nation contributor Hitchens passionately defends a great writer from attacks by both right and left, though he also refutes those fans who proclaim his sainthood. George Orwell (1903-1950), a socialist who abhorred all forms of totalitarianism, was, as Hitchens points out, prescient about the "three great subjects of the twentieth century:" imperialism, fascism, and Stalinism. In all things, Orwell's feelings were every bit as visceral as intellectual, and Hitchens devotes some of his best writing to describing Orwell's first-hand experiences with empire in Burma. It was there that he learned to hate racism, bullying and exploitation of the lower classes. "Orwell can be read," notes Hitchens, "as one of the founders of... post-colonialism." Orwell's insights about fascism and Stalinism crystallized in Spain, while he was fighting in the Civil War. Far from being an ordinary biography, this small volume is an in-depth investigation of the essential George Orwell-"the heart on fire and the brain on ice." Hitchens recognizes that Orwell was more than the author of 1984 and Animal Farm. He was a keen critic of Nazism and Stalinism and didn't soften his pictures of them to sell books. His analysis of the grave inequities of those two forms of government is sufficiently acute to apply to the early 21st century's political spectrum. While claiming that Orwell "requires extricating from a pile of saccharine tablets and moist hankies [as] an object of sickly veneration and sentimental over-praise," Hitchens, a columnist for Vanity Fair and the Nation, asserts that in contrast to his many contemporaries who wrote about the era's political issues (e.g., Louis MacNeice, Stephen Spender, and Cecil Day Lewis), "it [is] possible to reprint every single letter, book review and essay composed by Orwell without exposing him to any embarrassment"-a remarkable feat, indeed. The only problem with this study is that it assumes that the reader already knows that Orwell conscientiously overcame his early anti-intellectualism, his dislike of the "dark" people of the English Empire, and his squeamishness about homosexuality-all to become a great humanist. Thus, it is written for readers who have already done their homework. Recommended for large libraries with extensive political science holdings.

Entertaining Book by a Tough-Minded Latter-day Disciple

Remarkably, as the 21st century opens George Orwell's shadow looms larger than ever over the world, undiminished by the end of the Cold War (a phrase which he probably invented). He is increasingly claimed by both Left and Right as one of their own. Two Englishmen now living in America, Andrew Sullivan and Christopher Hitchens, can best claim the mantle of Orwell by virtue of their clearsightedness and ability to cut through cant. Hitchens has written a short, bracing book on why "Animal Farm", "1984", and the collected essays are still essential reading. Orwell was a divided man. He was emotionally a conservative and intellectually a socialist. He was able to live out the contradiction and thus was blessed (or cursed) with the ability to see the big picture. Most of us in our own little lives are opportunists; our social and political views are shaped by what seems to us will allow us to rise in the world. Because of his awareness of his contradictions (and an unusual strength of will or character) Orwell could more closely approach "objectivity" (that noble dream) than most of us.
Hitchens claims that Orwell was right about the three big issues of the 20th century--imperialism, Fascism, and Communism: something almost no other of his contemporaries can claim. In the chapter "Orwell and the Left" Hitchens swiftly eviscerates those critics who see Orwell as a sellout (Including Edward Said, whose blurb approving of Hitchens' earlier work appears prominently on the dust jacket of this one.) In "Orwell and the Right" he establishes that Orwell did not advocate mindless aggression against the Communists. Orwell attacked James Burnham for his pessimism and Hitchens says that Orwell didn't want a nuclear first-strike against the Soviets as so many did--it would have killed many of the people who made the successful peaceful revolution against Communism 40 years later. Perhaps the most important chapter in this book is "Deconstructing the Post-Modernist: Orwell and Transparency" in which Hitchens explains Orwell's abiding concern with "objective truth" and exposes the bad faith of the deconstructionists. (A disbelief in demonstratable truth can cover an awful lot of sins.)
Hitchens has made a lot of news the past few years with his arguments with his friends on the Left. He detests Bill and Hillary Clinton; and he has broken with the anti-war movement because of what he says is its solipsism and anti-Americanism. In these things he is merely following the lead of his mentor Orwell, who angered many on the left with "Animal Farm" and "1984." But these books have been proved correct over the years as any books could be. I'm betting time will be kind to Hitchens, too.

Hitch Gushins...

It's nice to see the Hitch, old attack dog that he is, back off on the usual invective and give himself over to a 210 page fit of uncontrollable gushing. He's persuasive, too. It's hard not to come away from reading the book with a newfound respect for Orwell, for his "power of facing", and his fireproof integrity.
I can't help but feel that Hitchen's warning not to think of Orwell as a saint is just a fig leaf. Obviously, it's a cannonization essay, it's just that Hitch is too embarrassed to admit he's written such a thing. But why shouldn't we cannonize Orwell? Why shouldn't we take our hats off in awe at the man who saw each of the historical forces that would shape the next 50 years with such amazing clarity, all without ever abandoning an ethical code that would only be vindicated by everything that followed? Orwell's insights remain fresh, the power of his ethical vision remains urgently relevant, and as a role model on personal integrity, an inspiration for those who want to "walk the walk", we could scarcely do better.

Why Hitchens Writes

Having been encouraged from about the age of twelve to read the essays of George Orwell I read Christopher Hitchens' recent meditation on him with a sense of gratitude. I haven't read any other work on Orwell which so perfectly conveys his inexhaustibility.
Hitchens' real achievement here is a mastery of Orwell's tone. Orwell's essays keep a reader up until dawn and WHY ORWELL MATTERS did the same to this reader.
I can't say I agree with everything in the book, and have to say that sometimes I didn't grasp Hitchens' arguments. But, the book is brief, and we know what Shakespeare said about brevity. The chief pleasure of this book is its style; learned from one of the greatest defenders of expressed thought.

In 1947 the young Raimonds Staprans emigrated with his family from Latvia to America, and for the past half century the artist and playwright has lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area. In Raimonds Staprans: Art of Tranquility and Turbulence, Paul Karlstrom investigates the realism and abstraction in Staprans's work, focusing on the more edgy and self-revealing paintings by bringing the artist's life experience and personal psychology prominently into the equation. Karlstrom recognizes that the meaning of Staprans's work cannot be understood solely in terms of the painterly skill and aesthetic beauty that characterize the landscapes, marines, and still lifes. Neither can it be fully appreciated in the minimalist abstraction with which Staprans qualifies his realism. Rather, the key to understanding is hidden in the secret life and philosophical preoccupation that emerged in the author's interviews with the artist.

Two prominent writers provide brief essays dealing with Staprans as a "trans-Atlanticist": Latvian cultural critic Helena Demakova brings the perspective of the artist's native country to his American émigré story. American art historian Peter Selz examines realism's rich modernist potential in Staprans and other artists who have pushed realism to discover new conceptual and aesthetic truths.

Staprans is also a writer, known in Latvia mainly for his work for the stage, and excerpts from his writings provide insight into his painting.

Paul J. Karlstrom is a specialist in modern and contemporary art and culture in the United States. He recently retired as West Coast Regional Director of the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art in San Marino, California. Among his publications are On the Edge of America: California Modernist Art, 1900-1950.

Raimonds Strapans: Art of Tranquility and Trurbulence

Outstanding book on Strapans. Showing works that he considers controversal and an interview with him about these works. He was also a playwright and he describes the reason behind them. The book shows his early works and because of this one can see the evolution of his style. I would recommend this book to any one interested in the Bay Area Artists from the early 50-60's and is also familular with Wayne Thiebaud's work to see the difference between the two artists.

A Fine Monograph on One of California Bay Area Artists Worthy of Attention

Raimonds Staprans may not be a household name among the many devotees of the Bay Area artists such as Thiebaud, Bechtle, Parks, Diebenkorn, Brown etc - artists who capture the light and landscape of that particularly beautiful region - but this monograph should change that recognition. Author Paul Karlstrom has written a scholarly evaluation of Staprans' work and career and includes enough visual and written information to seduce the reader into an appreciation for a gifted quiet artist.

Staprans, born in 1926 in Latvia, emigrated to the US in 1947 when Communism created a negative space for artistic thought. In a fine essay by Helena Demekova the influence of his country's art tradition and sociopolitical upheaval is clearly defined. Once in the USA Staprans settled in the Bay Area where he began his painting output as an abstract expressionist only to gradually evolve into a painter of landscape, still life (fruits, paint cans, angry birds), and nudes in a manner in which he flattened his compositional lines and utilized brilliant color fields in what has been termed 'realist abstraction and psychological expressionism'. Art historian essayist Peter Selz examines and defines Staprans' place in the field of art in an illuminating manner, posing that 'realism' enhances the brilliance of conceptual abstraction.

But worthy as the written words about Raimonds Staprans are, nothing compares to the generous examples of his works included in this tome. The paintings follow his career, the most impressive being the extraordinarily luminous poolscapes and simple houses in design of complex canvases, works that engender comparison to the works of Wayne Thiebaud, Josef Albers and even Mondrian. Staprans use of vibrant, explosive color in patterns that suggest realism but go beyond to a plane of painterly truth in forms that are uniquely his. This is magnificent painting, work that has earned him a well-deserved seat in the pantheon of Bay Area artists. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06

INTRODUCTION
The year was 1975, but it seems like yesterday that I first introduced the “photographic triangle” to a group of about forty students. It was on a Saturday, and I was running an all-day workshop on understanding exposure on the campus of Portland Community College as part of a program of continuing adult education.

I had never presented to a group this “large,” and little did I know then that groups
of forty students one day would swell toward one thousand attendees. My journey
has in many respects been truly humbling. 

When I first picked up a camera in the summer of 1970 (a suggestion made by my older brother Bill, who was a keen amateur photographer), my intention was to use the camera as a way to record landscapes and cityscapes. I was an “artist” and wanted to capture those scenes for later sketching with my inks and charcoals. Little did I know then that the reference photos I took with my brother’s camera would send me on a photographic journey that has lasted more than forty-five years. I have had far more adventures, chance encounters, and good fortune than should be legally allowed for a single lifetime. Of course, all of my adventures have not been without some setbacks, unbelievable obstacles, and momentous challenges, but somehow I’m still here churning out another edition of Understanding Exposure. 

During those first five years, 1970 to 1975, I made it a point to write down every exposure for the reference photographs I took. When I would review each image, I knew which aperture I used and which shutter speed I used and was soon able to determine why one aperture in conjunction with a particular lens would produce a massive depth of field or a very narrow depth of field. I also knew which shutter speeds were capable of creating motion-filled water, windblown flowers and leaves, and razor-sharp action-stopping subjects. I was soon figuring out that in every picture-taking situation, I was presented with no fewer than six possible exposure options and those six exposure situations could easily be changed to a different set of six options merely by changing from one film to the other; an ISO of 50 produces a different set of six possible correct exposure options than does an ISO of 200 or an ISO of 640, and so on. 

I soon found myself making a drawing of a triangle in one of my notepads, showing the three ingredients of every correct exposure: aperture, shutter speed, and the ISO. Of course at the heart of the triangle was the light meter, whose “job” is 100 percent dependent on the photographer’s ability tell it which aperture or shutter speed he or she is using and how many “eyeballs” (ISO) he or she wishes to use for a particular scene. I mention all this for one very important reason: I emphatically believe today, just as I did back then, that if you
will invest the time needed to understand the vision of the photographic triangle and the many “creatively correct” exposures it offers, your mind will be truly free to create almost any image it can conceive in camera!

I am all too familiar with the phrase “the third time’s a charm,” and I honestly thought that when I finished the third edition of Understanding Exposure, it would be the last edition I’d write for one simple reason: I felt I had exhausted the subject of understanding exposure. Obviously I was wrong! 

I am incredibly humbled by the response to the earlier editions, with combined sales of more than one million copies in seven different languages. With numbers like that one might ask, “Why mess with a winning formula?” 

To be clear, I am not messing with the winning formula, but since the third edition of Understanding Exposure was released in 2009, even more changes have taken place in the photo industry. The one change I readily welcome is the ease of using an electronic flash. One I don’t appreciate as much is the extremely high dynamic range that many cameras are quickly approaching. In a single shot, a few of today’s cameras’ sensors are capable of capturing upward of 9 stops of light to dark exposure, and at this rate a sensor soon will be recording the human eye’s ability to see a 16-stop range! This is a huge change from the days of film, when one might expect about a 5-stop range of light to dark. Why is this a problem? In some cases it will mean the end of the many beautiful sidelit landscapes of great contrast in which the strong highlights are in marked opposition to the deep and dense shadows. There will no more of this stark contrast because of the sensors’ ability to create images that cover a much wider exposure and tonal range.

On the flip side of all this new technology, I am hearing from more and more amateurs who have not only realized the limitations of their camera phones and are buying DSLRs but are also interested in “getting it right” in camera rather than relying on after-market software to clean up their exposure mistakes. In effect, it seems the trend today is akin to the days of film, when most, if not all, amateur photographers took pride in “owning” their creativity. They relied solely on their knowledge of the multitude of creative exposures that lie within the photographic triangle and a full understanding of the power of light, including the use of electronic flash. I have seen more evidence of “owning one’s creativity” in the last twelve months than I have seen in the previous five years, and needless to say, I am thrilled. I am not, nor have I ever been, nor will I ever be a fan of automated exposures. And yes, beyond the choice to shoot in any automated camera-setting mode, my disdain for automation includes the use of highly manipulative photo software, with HDR (high dynamic range) being just one example.

I am pleased to say what some call my formula (what I call the photographic triangle) for award-winning exposures has not changed one iota since I first introduced it to a group of forty students way back in 1975. Despite the digital age we are in and will be living in for what I am guessing will be years and years to come, the formula for award-winning exposures is no different today from what it was in 1975 and even as far back as the 1930s. 

A correct exposure was, is, and always will be a combination of your choosing the right-size hole in your lens (the aperture), and the right amount of time that light is allowed to remain on the digital sensor (shutter speed), and how both of these factors are influenced by your choice of ISO. 
Back in the day, the pinhole camera proved to be a terrific method of recording an exposure (it was much like a hole in a lightproof shoe box that held a piece of light-sensitive film), and as far as I am concerned, the digital camera of today is nothing more than a lightproof shoe box with a piece of light-sensitive “film” inside. Granted, these cameras don’t look like lightproof shoe boxes, but they perform in much the same way, albeit they record a single image a bit faster. 
Now that the digital age of photography has grown up since the first introduction of the Kodak/Nikon DCS with its whopping 1.3-megapixel charge-coupled device (CCD), it’s also fair to say that many shooters who are just starting out in photography are more confused than ever before, and for this I hold the camera manufacturers responsible.

Because of their attempts to make so much of the picture-taking process automated, the simple manual cameras of yesterday have been replaced by cameras reminiscent of the cockpit of a Boeing 747-400. I don’t know about you, but I find the cockpit of a 747-400 amazingly intimidating! The once simple shutter speed dial on the camera body and the once simple aperture dial normally found on the lens have taken a backseat to dials that are crammed with “features” such as Landscape mode, Flower mode, Portrait mode, Aperture Priority mode, Action Sequence mode, Sports mode, Group Portrait mode, Shutter Priority mode, and Program mode, and there is even a bee on the Flower mode! Combine all that supposed automation with auto white balance, auto ISO, and auto flash and you’ve got a recipe for frustration. Attesting to this frustration are the many shooters who have discovered that automation works only sometimes and only with some subjects. As my email in-box shows on a daily basis, there is nothing worse or more embarrassing to a beginning photographer who has taken a really nice image than being asked how he or she did it and not having a clue. 

Just last month, I received an email from a young man who had been selected to show his work in his office’s cafeteria. He wrote me to say that he had no clue about exposure and was sure that once his prints were on display, many of his coworkers would begin to press him for information about his photographs that he did not have, such as aperture and shutter speed and even lens choice. I do not want to suggest that this is vitally important information that one needs to know to take great photographs, but I believe it is vitally important information if one wishes to make great photographs consistently. 

Understanding exposure is not hard at all, as more than 900,000 photographers all around the world have already discovered. The only requirement is that you throw away your camera’s instruction manual after you reference it to learn one thing: how to set the controls to manual. Here is a clue: On every DSLR, you will find the symbol M, and when the dial is set to M, you are sitting in the copilot’s seat, about to go on a maiden voyage. Sure, setting your camera to M might seem scary at first, but you should have no worries since I, the captain, am sitting right next to you. And once you begin to experience the freedom of truly flying on your own, you will be asking yourself, “What ever possessed me to think I couldn’t do a manual exposure?” Honestly, it’s that easy; I promise! 

With manual exposure, the world of truly creative exposures will open up to you. You will discover the utter joy of owning your exposures from beginning to end, and taking part in their creation. The joy of that one image can last lifetimes as generations yet to come continue to enjoy the work you create!

Also, in this fourth edition of Understanding Exposure, all the photographs have been replaced.
Not only does this give it a freshened up appearance, but I also have added two additional and invaluable subjects that have much to do with award-winning exposures: an expanded section on the ease and joy of shooting with electronic flash and shooting star trails, and a section on the use of flashlights as another tool for extremely creative in-camera exposure options!
Flash photography was touched on only briefly in the third edition of Understanding Exposure, and many of you let me know that you wanted to see a more thorough discussion in this edition. As the saying goes, “Ask and you shall receive!” 

Yes, I know the use of portable electronic flash is deserving of its own book, and that is why I wrote just such a book about three years ago. However, since that time even more amateurs have begun working with flash, most with utter confusion about how, when, and where to use it; this is all the more reason to include a simple and easy-to-understand section on using an electronic flash off camera. 

I will add that the ease of using flash is, in my view, the only highlight the camera manufacturers have come up with that really deserves mentioning.

Simply put, automated TTL flash delivers on its promise of “foolproof flash exposure” far more often than not, and the information I am providing in this fourth edition of Understanding Exposure is more than enough to get you started down the road of creative flash exposure. If you are a photographer that feels comfortable using manual mode

If you know how a camera works, this opens things up even more, explaining how Apeture, Shutter Speed, and ISO
are mathematically linked. I understood what shutter speeds are, how they worked, and how to use them.
But why are the basic speeds always in the order of; 1,2,4,8, 15, 30, 60, 125, 500, 1000? Why do some newer cameras include more numbers?
Why are F stops numbers graduated the way they are? 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22?
The same can be asked about ISO!
If you are a photographer that feels comfortable using manual mode, and you don't know the answers to these questions ( that was me! ),
The AHA! moments within this book, that are simply explained, will absolutely open your mind to more freedom in expression and confidence,
this simple knowledge brings to your brains table. (was that even a legal sentence?) Thanks Bryan for the quick course in logic!

Worthwhile purchase

Material is presented straightforwardly and is fairly easy to understand, even for someone who is equal parts stubborn against and fearful of learning to use Manual mode (e.g. me.:)

After reading the first few chapters, I have a better understanding of how my camera operates, and why using Auto modes does not always work. Within one day, I have learned how the 3 parts of the photographic triangle work together--and how to use them to my advantage.

As Mr. Peterson says in the book, it really is empowering to take a good 'M' photo!

The Very Best Book On the Subject - Perfect For Beginners

Understanding Exposure should almost be a requirement for every person buying a DSLR or a camera with an "M" (manual) mode. Since it was first published, Understanding Exposure has provided a friendly, easy, and accessible way for everyone to learn to use their cameras to create beautiful images. I've been in the photography business for almost two decades and this book has always been my first recommendation (more than any classes or any other book) when pressed for help with cameras. It really is that impressive of a resource and now has been completely revised and updated with all new pictures and new information.

At heart, the book is about what it says - exposure. Exposure is not hard - honestly, any photographer will tell you that it is all about the choices made by the person taking the image with regards to the right aperture, shutter, and ISO. Peterson calls the triangle and once those are understood, it's easy to make consistently beautiful images. Topics in the book build upon those three slowly yet thoroughly, showing graphically as well as with words how choices affect the final image.

Beyond the exposure triangle, little nuggets of great information are interspersed throughout. The images in the book are inspiring and the tone very friendly. It's for a very good reason that the book has been so successful over the last decade - Peterson makes it easy to put away the camera manual and get the most important basics down to start taking consistently good images.

For those interested in what has changed and if they want to update their old copy, all the images have been updated and new sections added: An expanded section on flash, star trails, flashlights for in-camera creativity.

Really, this is *the* book for learning photography. Highest recommendation, especially for a thorough and inspiring set of updates to an already excellent resource. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

About the Author

Neal Stephenson is primarily a fiction author and has received several awards for his works in speculative fiction. His most popular books include Snow Crash, The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, The Baroque Cycle, and Anathem. He is a co-founding author of the Foreworld universe and co-author of The Mongoliad trilogy. He resides in Seattle with his family.

Mark Teppo is the author of the Codex of Souls urban fantasy series, the hypertext dream narrative The Potemkin Mosaic, and the vampire eco-thriller Earth Thirst. He is a co-founding author of the Foreworld universe and co-author of The Mongoliad trilogy, along with many other tales in the universe. A bibliophile whose interests include historical martial arts and esoteric traditions, he lives in the Pacific Northwest.

Charles C. Mann is the author of 1493, a New York Times bestseller, and 1491, which received the Keck Award from the National Academy of Science. The co-author of five additional books, including a young readers’ version of 1491 called Before Columbus, Charles is a regular contributor to The Atlantic, Science, and Wired. He has covered science, technology, and commerce for publications such as National Geographic, the New York Times, Vanity Fair, and the Washington Post. Charles has been a finalist for the National Magazine Award four times, and has won writing awards from the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Physics, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Margaret Sanger Foundation.

Ellis Amdur is a well-known practitioner and researcher of classical Japanese martial arts. He has written three books on the subject, including Dueling with O-sensei, Old School, and Hidden in Plain Sight. Ellis also works as a crisis intervention specialist and has authored and published nine books on the de-escalation of aggressive, emotionally disturbed individuals. His first novel, The Girl with the Face of the Moon was published in December 2014.

Dean Kotz has drawn comics for a variety of publishers, including Boom! Studios, Zenescope, Monkeybrain, and Image. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

The first issue of a storyline, not the first issue of the series

'Cimarronin: Fall of the Cross #1' is part of a continuing series. I received a review copy of this issue only, but I liked what I read and would like to read more.

The series is about an exiled samurai in New Spain and his companion who is an ex-Jesuit priest. This book starts with the capture and branding of slaves. One slave can speak Portuguese, so he becomes the translator for his captors. He also plans an uprising. While this is happening, the samurai has his own fight going on. It kind of jumps around a bit, and with only a length of 25 pages, it's over before it's begun.

It's written by a host of authors, including Neal Stephenson, and while the story jumps around, it's an interesting premise. The art by Dean Kotz can be a bit confusing at times. There are lots of characters and many of them kind of blur together. Yet, I still liked the art style. 25 pages isn't much to base a review on, but I found some interesting threads of story here.

Too Muddled and Confusing

As previously noted this is an ongoing series of which this book is a part and perhaps that accounted for some of my confusion. I found this book to be utterly confusing and practically impossible to follow. Muddles artwork that made distinguishing among a whole host of characters difficult if not impossible certainly didn't help. A number of writers are listed as contributors and the old adage about writing by committee may hold true here and we may just have a collective mess or I am just too obtuse to discern the beauty - take your pick.

Spanish Olive Oil!

My family loves Carrabba's seasonal dishes, including the Limoncello Bread Pudding. Being able to make them at home, when the restaurant is not offering them, is well worth the cost of this cookbook. While not everything they serve is included (use Look Inside for a table of contents) the recipes that are included were absolutely worth the price to me. These have been adjusted for the home kitchen. The ones I've tried execute well. Also included are some minor tips, such as Carrabba's using a propriatary Spanish Olive Oil instead of Italian. ( This explains why I haven't found an Italian oil of similar taste. ) The author also advises not buying diced canned tomatoes as they have been chemically treated not to break down during cooking. These are the kind of practical tips that add value. Too many cookbooks offer useless information to pad the page count. Carrabba's has wisely chosen to produce a thinner book with clean and spare page design. This is a book meant to be used in the kitchen, not toured from an armchair. Great gift for a beginning cook.

AMAZING!

You are probably wondering if the recipes in this book are authentic. Well, THEY ARE! :) I have made the chicken soup, calamari, garlic mashed potatoes, and pollo rosa maria so far. Let me tell you, they taste just as good as the restaurant dishes! Definitely recommend this book. It is very affordable and totally worth it! The recipes are easy to follow. I'm surprised it didn't cost more!
