Ivory and Bone, by Julie Eshbaugh

[Young Adult Fiction (Ages 12-17)]
[Read by Michael Curran-Dorsano]

Debut author Julie Eshbaugh's sweeping prehistoric fantasy -- with allusions to ''Pride and Prejudice'' -- will enthrall listeners with high-stakes survival, blinding betrayal, and star-crossed love.

Hunting, gathering, and keeping his family safe -- that's the life seventeen-year-old Kol knows. Then bold, enigmatic Mya arrives from the south with her family, and Kol is captivated. He wants her to like and trust him, but any hopes of impressing her are ruined when he makes a careless -- and nearly grave -- mistake. However, there's something more to Mya's cool disdain … a history wrought with loss that comes to light when another clan arrives. With them is Lo, an enemy from Mya's past who Mya swears has ulterior motives.

As Kol gets to know Lo, tensions between Mya and Lo escalate until violence erupts. Faced with shattering losses, Kol is forced to question every person he's trusted. One thing is for sure: this was a war that Mya or Lo -- Kol doesn't know which -- had been planning all along.

With riveting action and illustrative prose that leaps from the page, newcomer Julie Eshbaugh will have listeners mesmerized.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—Seventeen-year-old Kol is the oldest son of the High Elder of his clan, and while he and his brother are of marrying age, there are no marriageable women in their clan. The rhythm of Kol's hunter/gatherer life changes, however, when a group from the clan to the south visit to build an alliance—with two eligible unmarried women in their party. Mya, also 17, is beautiful and severe, and she and Kol begin a rocky acquaintance when she saves him from a charging saber-tooth while on a mammoth hunt. Despite his acts of gratitude, Kol cannot read or anticipate Mya's feelings, which makes his confusion about his own feelings even more complex. When Lo, a woman from the clan to the north, arrives in Kol's village with a dark intent, the plot becomes all the more complicated. Eshbaugh packs her debut with a classic love triangle, feuding clans, a well-drawn prehistoric setting, and a handful of fan fiction elements that will appeal to teens. VERDICT Buy this Stone Age, gender-flipped take on Pride and Prejudice if your readers are on the lookout for something compellingly out of the ordinary.—Amy Koester, Learning Experiences Department, Skokie Public Library, IL

From the Back Cover

The only life seventeen-year-old Kol knows is hunting at the foot of the Great Ice with his brothers. But food is becoming scarce, and without another clan to align with, Kol, his family, and their entire group are facing an uncertain future.

Traveling from the south, Mya and her family arrive at Kol’s camp with a trail of hurt and loss behind them, and hope for a new beginning. When Kol meets Mya, her strength, independence, and beauty instantly captivate him, igniting a desire for much more than survival.

Then on a hunt, Kol makes a grave mistake that jeopardizes the relationship that he and Mya have only just started to build. Mya was guarded to begin with—and for good reason—but no apology or gesture is enough for her to forgive him. Soon after, another clan arrives on their shores. And when Mya spots Lo, a daughter of this new clan, her anger intensifies, adding to the already simmering tension between families. After befriending Lo, Kol learns of a dark history between Lo and Mya that is rooted in the tangle of their pasts.

When violence erupts, Kol is forced to choose between fighting alongside Mya or trusting Lo’s claims. And when things quickly turn deadly, it becomes clear that this was a war that one of them had been planning all along.

So much more than just a caveman Ice Age novel, gripping, eloquent, and exquisitely paced-- a terrific YA debut!
By Christina (Ensconced in Lit)
Let me just say up front that this is usually not the type of book I'd pick up. The thought of prehistory fantasy kind of makes me think of cavemen who go around and bash things in the head with a rock with grunts. How would you make this sexy or appealing? Well, turns out, you have to be Julie Eshbaugh.

I don't want anyone to have the stupid reservations I did, because seriously, no one, including Julie, would want to write or read about something like that. This book is gorgeous and pulse pounding as it builds up to the intense finish, and this unbeliever is a total groupie now.

Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh stars Kol, who is the eldest son of his clan, who is expected to marry, but the problem is, their clan has no women of marrying age. Enter Mya, the oldest daughter of a nearby clan, who seems to harbor some dark secrets in her troubled eyes, and she has nothing but biting and rude words for Kol, who let's face it, is the nicest guy in prehistoric history. This seems simple, but it's anything but, and as Eshbaugh eloquently and painstakingly takes us through both the past and present, Kol's world and his way of thinking are completely shaken and changed by a single girl.

I loved this book. I actually was reading two other books at the time, that were at the top of my TBR pile, and I abandoned them both to blaze through this book. Eshbaugh takes some really wonderful risks here. First, obviously is the fact it's a prehistory fantasy. I love that even this genre is innovative. Secondly, the novel is mostly written in partial second, where Mya is referred to as "you." This may seem jarring to the reader at first, but the usage of this narrative makes so much sense as it is a story told by Kol to Mya. Stories play such a large role in this novel, and in one particular twist, it takes on extra eerie meaning. I love how Eshbaugh effortlessly weaves storytelling into Kol's emotional journey.

And Kol. This guy... it's hard to even imagine someone nicer. Yes, he's naive, and he has character flaws, but he's an optimist and a good guy at the core. You can't help but root for him, and want to take him for yourself. Hey, if Mya isn't going to come around, there are many of us who will snap him up immediately! That said, Mya is a really fascinating character, and I love that she says so much without even uttering a word. And I won't talk too much about villains, but let's just say that I loved this person in a twisted way and am still thinking about what went down.

Overall, a really ambitious and beautifully written debut that takes a lot of risks and soars with flying colors. Eshbaugh is a writer to watch.

SO unique!
By A Page With A View
This gender-swapped adaptation of Pride & Prejudice set in prehistoric times with mammoths is seriously brilliant.

Basic plot: Kol's mother is desperate to have her sons married since their clan doesn't have any girls their age. Two girls from a different clan show up (Darcy & Bingley) and the familiar story unfolds. The stuff with Wickham turned into something that suit the setting better, but a surprising amount translated really well! The first 80% is narrated like Elizabeth is telling her version of how everything unfolded to Darcy.

It felt like it was set in Canada or somewhere like that based on the description of their kayaks, landscape, and wildlife? The descriptions of everything were so beautifully done and really brought the time period & setting to life. Like Kol measures time in how long it would take an echo to fade or a snowflake to melt, and describes his gangly younger brother as "hewn and awkward like an unfinished stone tool." There are so many cave analogies, too. I don't think I've ever read a book in this setting/time and it was just really cool to see it done so well!

People who aren't Jane Austen fans will still love this because it's an extremely loose retelling. It by no means relies on Jane Austen's plot and you probably wouldn't notice the similarities unless you're obsessed with P&P. I was having fun spotting how the two books could fit, but it really is an absolutely gorgeous story on its own!

Great debut novel from an obviously talented writer
By The Genre Minx Book Reviews
This main plot is about Kol from the Manu clan and his focus on one woman, Mya. If there are any allusions going on it is with the movie 10,000 B.C. The story is told in first person from the perspective of Kol. Roughly for the first three quarters of the book the story is told in a narration from his perspective of his meeting her and following events that led them to where he starts to tell the story. Oral tradition is how history was passed from generation to generation in the past and this narration is reminiscent of that. The romantic in me absolutely loves this because he is so detailed in his thoughts, feelings, and honesty. He holds nothing back and I love how the author was able to keep the narration so well and from his perspective. Truly well written and not just his narration but she does an excellent job of the world construction for pre-historic times but unfortunately for me I kept envisioning 10,000 B.C.

Kol’s deepest desire is for Mya to see him, to want him, to trust him, to be his. Mya is from the Olen clan and there is a bad history between these two clans that almost led to a war five years ago. Kol is unaware of exactly what the catalyst was that led to the tensions between clans but his fascination with Mya is the spark that starts his mind pondering. That spark has opened his awareness to why Mya and her clan are not so open to the idea of the clans aligning and later on explains the poor treatment of his clan.

Seems that clan Olen also have a few skeletons in their closet. Unbeknownst to either clan Manu or Olen there is a third clan, the Bosha, in the background who have a nefarious interest in the extinction of the Olen elder, Chev, and his family. Through deception this third clan is almost able to bring their plan to fruition but things do not go as planned thanks to the bravery of Kol.

For most of the book, I found the whole character of Mya to be a turn off. I wanted Kol to just move on and seek greener pastures. Had I been his friend I would have definitely been trying to push him to be sensible because the girl has issues. In the last quarter of this book my feelings for her started to thaw because as things came to light I began to understand the “why” to her behaviors.

Kol, now there is a guy after my heart even if he is a bit naive. Yes, naive because he is fixated on a girl that is not worthy of him or seemingly interested in him. I found his character to be well rounded and well developed. The imagery that I see when I think back about his narration in the re-telling of his perspective of Mya just makes me love this character.

I felt that the ideas were developed, the sub plots were tied together nicely and that the writing style was original, although there are some issues with the modern voice in a pre-historic setting. The story was pretty slow until the end where the climax was quite tumultuous. Also, I am not against “insta-love” if it is believable to me. Kol was inexperienced with females and given how the story was told he was fascinated by Mya but is that due to lack of previous options or experience? It just came across as “puppy love” to me and was hard for me to take seriously. If he had previously had female options and took no interest and then he met Mya and wowwzza then I would have been able to take his fascination seriously.

The biggest turn off for me was the first person voice. Everything is from Kol’s perspective and I get nothing from Mya’s. There is no sidekick to add to the discussion and bring some deepening of the characters. So I just have his thoughts and feelings on everything but I felt that they were the thoughts and feelings of a pre-pubescent boy. Any seventeen-year-old boy would have some inner thoughts that were not pure and rational. I would have liked to known Mya’s side of things. Her inner thoughts, how she felt about Kol, her struggles and desires.

There was so much good with this story but there were just some issues that I could not get past to fangirl about this book. It is a great debut novel from an obviously talented writer and I am hoping for more in the next book.

A must buy book
By James E. Casella Jr.
I bought this book nearly 40 years ago and loved it! So much that I wanted to read it again 20 years later and could not find it. I thought about it again a month or so ago and went on an internet search for it, not sure if it was still in print. Philip Jose Farmer was one of the best sci-fi authors of his time and his books are still worth reading today. This book starts out with an older man looking to buy a house with his cranky wife. A portal opens up in the basement to another world and his adventure begins. Minus the cranky wife who does not have a clue where he went to. From there the story picks up. I am not going to give it away for you. the review in Amazon gives you an outline of the story. You should BUY this book. If you like sci-fi you will like this.

Another fun and fantastic journey by Farmer
By S. McDaniel
Another fun and fantastic journey by Farmer. Probably not as creative and suspenseful as the "Day World" series, but I did enjoy it more than "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg". If you like any of Farmers other material, than you will enjoy this one. Pick it up.

My Favorite Phillp Jose Famer Series!
By Bill D. Allen
The World of Tiers series is an outstanding bit of work that I have read again and again over the years. It is up there with the Roger Zelazny AMBER books in the pantheon on seminal fantasy works. You will not be disappointed by this series of books about cruel and insane makers of worlds jealously competing against their godlike kin. Highly recommended.

Fabulously Functional & Full of Flavor!
By jordan
This book has saved me so many hours and most importantly, without sacrificing imaginative cuisine packed full of flavor. I LOVE cooking and feel trapped and sad when I just can't make the time to do it -- this fabulous bible is now my go-to for getting dinner on the table AND even planning ahead, which is not naturally my style. I had to dust off my Cuisinart but I am glad that I did. I highly recommend buying this book and a food processor to prop up on your countertop - get buzzing now!

Perfect Gift
By Ebony
Awesome recipes in this beauty for the cook who enjoys making real hearty home-cooked meals. In this world of instant EVERYTHING this is a breathe of fresh air so to speak. I consider myself a novice in the kitchen but actually the recipes are simple enough to follow. The chicken potpie on the cover caught my eye which was as delicious as I remember them from my younger days. The organization of the book and pictures were thoughtfully put together. I also found the section on first food informative. As a mother who took the time to puree my daughter's baby food the simple suggestion for adding flavor are ingenious. I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

So many uses for the processor
By Brenda Bell Chute
This cookbook is great for getting the most use out of your food processor. I have had a food processor for years and would only occasionally use it to chop nuts, onions etc.
This book guides you through the different types of blades and disks that most processors come with, I had only ever used the S blade!
The recipes are very easy to read and follow--everything from desserts, dips and main dishes. And prepping food yourself is much healthier than buying processed foods. I have tried several recipes this weekend and they turned out wonderfully. I cannot wait to explore and try more of the recipes from the book.
I like visual examples of food in recipes and this does have some, I wish it had more. But overall a great book to learn to get the full benefit of your food processor and get to eating more healthy.

SummaryEquations Self-Test Basic Problems Advanced Problems Electronics Workbench/CircuitMaker Troubleshooting Problems (keyed to CDROM) Answers to Section Reviews Answers to Related Problems for Examples Answers to Self-Test SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THIS TEXTBOOK

As mentioned before, this book is divided into two parts: DC Circuits and AC Circuits. The text can be used to accommodate a variety of scheduling and program requirements. Some suggestions follow:

Option 1: A two-term dc/ac sequence should allow sufficient time to cover all or most of the topics in the book. Chapters 1 through 7 can be covered in the first term and Chapters 8 through 15 in the second term.

Option 2: A modification of Option 1 is to add the coverage of capacitors through Section 9-5 and inductors through Section 11-5 to the first term do course.

Option 3: Yet another modification to Option 1 for those who prefer to cover reactive components before covering reactive circuits is to cover Chapter 11 on inductors immediately after Chapter 9 on capacitors. Then follow with Chapter 10, Chapter 12, and so on.

Option 4: A one-term do/ac sequence. Obviously, this approach will require selective and faster-paced coverage of much of the material. Since program requirements vary greatly, it is difficult to make specific suggestions for selective coverage. TO THE STUDENT

Any career training requires hard work, and electronics is no exception. The best way to learn new material is by reading, thinking, and doing. This text is designed to help you along the way by providing an overview and objectives for each section, numerous worked-out examples, practice exercises, and review questions with answers.

Don't expect every concept to be crystal clear after a single reading. Read each section of the text carefully and think about what you have read. Work through the example problems step-by-step before trying the related problem that goes with the example. Sometimes more than one reading of a section will be necessary. After each section, check your understanding by answering the section review questions.

Review the chapter summary and equation list. Take the multiple-choice selftest. Finally, work the problems at the end of the chapter. Check your answers to the self-test at the end of the chapter and the odd-numbered problems against those provided at the end of the book. Working problems is the most important way to check your comprehension and solidify concepts. CAREERS IN ELECTRONICS

The field of electronics is very diverse, and career opportunities are available in many areas. Because electronics is currently found in so many different applications and new technology is being developed at a fast rate, its future appears limitless. There is hardly an area of our lives that is not enhanced to some degree by electronics technology. Those who acquire a sound, basic knowledge of electrical and electronic principles and are willing to continue learning will always be in demand.

The importance of obtaining a thorough understanding of the basic principles contained in this text cannot be overemphasized. Most employers prefer to hire people who have both a thorough grounding in the basics and the ability and eagerness to grasp new concepts and techniques. If you have a good training in the basics, an employer will train you in the specifics of the job to which you are assigned.

There are many types of job classifications for which a person with training in electronics technology may qualify. A few of the most common job functions are discussed briefly in the following paragraphs.

Service Shop Technician: Technical personnel in this category are involved in the repair or adjustment of both commercial and consumer electronic equipment that is returned to the dealer or manufacturer for service. Specific areas include TVs, VCRs, CD players, stereo equipment, CB radios, and computer hardware. This area also offers opportunities for self-employment.

Industrial Manufacturing Technician: Manufacturing personnel are involved in the testing of electronic products at the assembly-line level or in the maintenance and troubleshooting of electronic and electromechanical systems used in the testing and manufacturing of products. Virtually every type of manufacturing plant, regardless of its product, uses automated equipment that is electronically controlled.

Laboratory Technician: These technicians are involved in breadboarding, prototyping, and testing new or modified electronic systems in research and development laboratories. They generally work closely with engineers during the development phase of a product.

Field Service Technician: Field service personnel service and repair electronic equipment—for example, computer systems, radar installations, automatic banking equipment, and security systems—at the user's location.

Engineering Assistant/Associate Engineer: Personnel in this category work closely with engineers in the implementation of a concept and in the basic design and development of electronic systems. Engineering assistants are frequently involved in a project from its initial design through the early manufacturing stages.

Technical Writer: Technical writers compile technical information and then use the information to write and produce manuals and audiovisual materials. A broad knowledge of a particular system and the ability to clearly explain its principles and operation are essential.

Technical Sales: Technically trained people are in demand as sales representatives for high-technology products. The ability both to understand technical concepts and to communicate the technical aspects of a product to a potential customer is very valuable. In this area, as in technical writing, competency in expressing yourself orally and in writing is essential. Actually, being able to communicate well is very important in any technical job category because you must be able to record data clearly and explain procedures, conclusions, and actions taken so that others can readily understand what you are doing. MILESTONES IN ELECTRONICS

Before you begin your study of electronics fundamentals, let's briefly look at some of the important developments that led to the electronics technology we have today. The names of many of the early pioneers in electricity and electromagnetics still live on in terms of familiar units and quantities. Names such as Ohm, Ampere, Volta, Farad, Henry, Coulomb, Oersted, and Hertz are some of the better known examples. More widely known names such as Franklin and Edison are also significant in the history of electricity and electronics because of their tremendous contributions. Short biographies of some of these pioneers, like shown here, are located throughout the text.

The Beginning of Electronics: Early experiments with electronics involved electric currents in vacuum tubes. Heinrich Geissler (1814-1879) removed most of the air from a glass tube and found that the tube glowed when there was current through it. Later, Sir William Crookes (1832-1919) found the current in vacuum tubes seemed to consist of particles. Thomas Edison (1847-1931) experimented with carbon filament bulbs with plates and discovered that there was a current from the hot filament to a positively charged plate. He patented the idea but never used it.

Other early experimenters measured the properties of the particles that flowed in vacuum tubes. Sir Joseph Thompson (1856-1940) measured properties of these particles, later called electrons.

Although wireless telegraphic communication dates back to 1844, electronics is basically a 20th century concept that began with the invention of the vacuum tube amplifier. An early vacuum tube that allowed current in only one direction was constructed by John A. Fleming in 1904. Called the Fleming valve, it was the forerunner of vacuum tube diodes. In 1907, Lee deForest added a grid to the vacuum tube. The new device, called the audiotron, could amplify a weak signal. By adding the control element, deForest ushered in the electronics revolution. It was with an improved version of his device that made transcontinental telephone service and radios possible. In 1912, a radio amateur in San Jose, California, was regularly broadcasting music!

In 1921, the secretary of commerce, Herbert Hoover, issued the first license to a broadcast radio station; within two years over 600 licenses were issued. By the end of the 1920s radios were in many homes. A new type of radio, the superheterodyne radio, invented by Edwin Armstrong, solved problems with highfrequency communication. In 1923, Vladimir Zworykin, an American researcher, invented the first television picture tube, and in 1927 Philo T. Farnsworth applied for a patent for a complete television system.

The 1930s saw many developments in radio, including metal tubes, automatic gain control, directional antennas, and more. Also started in this decade was the development of the first electronic computers. Modern computers trace their origins to the work of John Atanasoff at Iowa State University. Beginning in 1937, he envisioned a binary machine that could do complex mathematical work. By 1939, he and graduate student Clifford Berry had constructed a binary machine called ABC, (for Atanasoff-Berry Computer) that used vacuum tubes for logic and condensers (capacitors) for memory. In 1939, the magnetron, a microwave oscillator, was invented in Britain by Henry Boot and John Randall. In the same year, the klystron microwave tube was invented in America by Russell and Sigurd Varian.

During World War II, electronics developed rapidly. Radar and very highfrequency communication were made possible by the magnetron and klystron. Cathode ray tubes were improved for use in radar. Computer work continued during the war. By 1946, John von Neumann had developed the first stored program computer, the Eniac, at the University of Pennsylvania. The decade ended with one of the most important inventions ever, the transistor.

Solid-State Electronics: The crystal detectors used in early radios were the forerunners of modern solid-state devices. However, the era of solid-state electronics began with the invention of the transistor in 1947 at Bell Labs. The inventors were Walter Brattain, John Bardeen, and William Shockley. PC (printed circuit) boards were introduced in 1947, the year the transistor was invented. Commercial manufacturing of transistors began in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1951.

The most important invention of the 1950s was the integrated circuit. On September 12, 1958, Jack Kilby, at Texas Instruments, made the first integrated circuit. This invention literally created the modern computer age and brought about sweeping changes in medicine, communication, manufacturing, and the entertainment industry. Many billions of "chips"—as integrated circuits came to be called—have since been manufactured.

The 1960s saw the space race begin and spurred work on miniaturization and computers. The space race was the driving force behind the rapid changes in electronics that followed. The first successful "op-amp" was designed by Bob Widlar at Fairchild Semiconductor in 1965. Called the uA709, it was very successful but suffered from "latch-up" and other problems. Later, the most popular op-amp ever, the 741, was taking shape at Fairchild. This op-amp became the industry standard and influenced design of op-amps for years to come.

By 1971, a new company that had been formed by a group from Fairchild introduced the first microprocessor. The company was Intel and the product was the 4004 chip, which had the same processing power as the Eniac computer. Later in the same year, Intel announced the first 8-bit processor, the 8008. In 1975, the first personal computer was introduced by Altair, and Popular Science magazine featured it on the cover of the January, 1975, issue. The 1970s also saw the introduction of the pocket calculator and new developments in optical integrated circuits.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THIS TEXTBOOK

By the 1980s, half of all U.S. homes were using cable hookups instead of television antennas. The reliability, speed, and miniaturization of electronics continued throughout the 1980s, including "automated testing and calibrating of PC boards. The computer became a part of instrumentation and the virtual instrument was created. Computers became a standard tool on the workbench.

The 1990s saw a widespread application of the Internet. In 1993, there were 130 websites, and now there are millions. Companies scrambled to establish a home page and many of the early developments of radio broadcasting had parallels with the Internet. In 1995, the FCC allocated spectrum space for a new service called Digital Audio Radio Service. Digital television standards were adopted in 1996 by the FCC for the nation's next generation of broadcast television.

Great Beginners book
By Kevin L. Riedl
I bought this book the summer before I changed my college major to Computer Engineering (Electrical Engineering mixed with Computer Science basically) and I learned a lot in a short period of time with this book. This does a really good job of teaching the basics and provides mostly fun little problems and gives detailed explanations of the solutions. I would heavily recommend for a high school student or early college student who wants to get a jump start on electronics and the math/methodology behind the basics of circuit design.

My only complaint is that it does not get very in depth on particular subjects which means that you will need to look elsewhere for detailed explanations of the more complex concepts.

Do you understand calculus? If so, DO NOT purchase, if not, probably OK
By Mr. Safety
This book is an interesting one. Honestly I can only say this:

If you have a working understanding of calculus and differential equations, this book will frustrate you to no end. It was our mandatory text for an intro to electrical engineering class (non EE majors), and after a few weeks we all abandoned hope. Our professor at the time was new and never had a chance to look at the text before the department selected it. He gave up trying to use it because it attempts to teach the fundamentals of electric circuit analysis using basic algebra. If you've ever had to learn about RC, RL, and RLC circuits, you know that these circuits are governed by first and second order differential equations; you just can't teach it thoroughly with algebra.

Just a simple example on current. Current is simply the amount of charge passing a given point in a certain instant in time. This can be simply written as I= dQ/dt. However, if you've never taken calculus, this expression might not make sense, or scare you off. Instead, there was some roundabout way of explaining current, which comes across as awkward when it can be reduced so much more.

This book was around for one year before it was discontinued as part of the course curriculum, whereby another text was chosen.

HOWEVER, I would imagine if you are still at the high school level and just have a basic interest in electricity, then perhaps this would be a decent text. I never truly looked at it from that level, but it does forego the complex mathematics that most will not have been acquainted to just yet.
