The elements of strong corporate governance are lucidly explained by author Rick Steinberg with the right balance between conceptual and practical. Too often books in this field are so conceptual as to be close to useless, or so academic as to bear little relation to the complexities of a fast moving real-life corporation. It also indicates an understanding of the costs and effort to get it right, the tradeoffs that must be made, and the scarcity of executive and Board time and comprehension, of complex fast-moving corporate entities. The inclusion of analysis of some of the current controverisies over Board practices--BP and HP for example--render it more alive and timely than many more stultifying entries. As a Chairman or CEO for over 25 years, I can appreciate the scope and practicality of this guide.

Makes it easy to understand a complex issue

While it's never too late for a current CEO or board member to learn what their responsibilities are to their stockholders, I'd strongly recommend that every undergraduate and graduate business school include this book as required reading. It is written in language that everyone can understand. It includes many current examples of the right and wrong ways companies have approached this subject in a readable fashion that is not boring. Mr STEINBERG has done a masterful job making a subject that appears to most as a unnecessary evil that one has to find a way to deal with into an opportunity for success .

Rick's vast knowledge of the subject and deep domain expertise are brought together to provide a framework for risk management to drive corporate success. As part of the new Manga Shakespeare series, this adaptation, set in modern-day Tokyo, does a competent job of combining manga-style art and abridged dialogue to immerse the reader in the world of the play. Although the richness of the language may be lost, the script keeps the spirit of the story intact, hitting all the major speeches. The art is occasionally muddied by too-similar gray-scale patterns, but the layout and characters are energetic and iconic. By situating the play in modern Tokyo among rival yakuza, or organized-crime families, Appignanesi and Leong present manga fans with a world they will recognize. Robin Brenner

An interesting and unique graphic novel version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The tragic story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet has no doubt inspired countless spin offs of the same story told in different ways. The musical “West Side Story” is probably the most obvious retelling of the same theme. I recently purchased this book (Romeo and Juliet: A Manga Shakespeare graphic novel illustrated by Sonia Leong) on Amazon for a bargain price. This play was one of the most popular plays during his lifetime.

The original play takes place in Verona, Italy. This graphic novel story version begins with a street fight between the Montague and Capulet clans two feuding mafia families. Romeo is the son of Montague and Juliet is the daughter of Capulet. They fall in love with each and like all of Shakespeare’s plays; there are conflicts, twists, turns and tragedy. I never like to give away too much information when reviewing any novel because it spoils it for the reader; however, if you are familiar with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet you already know the ending.

If you are into Shakespeare and like graphic novels you should check out this book.

I wanted to dislike it but well... my second grader loves it.

This was a bit odd. I got this for my second grader. He is picky about what he will bother to read, Star Wars, Capitan Underpants and comics in many forms. We negotiated this one as he has seen the play. He read it through in several hours, happily. Now he keeps asking when more are coming out.
The older sister, 5th grade, read 2/3 of the play with me this summer. She read it, enjoyed it, noted that it was missing some good parts.
So I read it through, against my better judgment. The pictures are fine I dislike the cuts. Halfway through I realize that I am really into it and the story, as portrayed in manga, works. Did I pick up new insights? Not any deep ones, but it was better than some productions. I found it a reasonable and moving presentation.
I'll buy more of these for the kids.
This would be useful for the kids who can not fathom reading Shakespeare. If a student was slipped a copy a year before there first school reading it might make a huge difference.

A Good Adaptation and Tool of Introduction

When I was in high school and first starting out in college, I used to be completely against the idea of adapting classical works into more popular formats, such as comic books or illustrated and abridged children's stories. I am often a completist and want to read and know the entire story, not an abridged or shortened version. However, I think experience has tempered me with some wisdom and I see how useful such adaptations can be and sometimes actually get excited about them.

Therefore, I was quite excited when a friend introduced me to this manga version of ROMEO AND JULIET. The story uses the manga art form to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet. The story is moved from medieval Italy to modern day Tokyo. The characters speak in the original text of the play, but it has been abridged (I'd say about 70% of the dialogue remains).

I'm not all that familiar with the manga format, but I know that manga is now huge in the U.S., especially with the pre-teen set, and is growing in popularity. As much as I myself like to read stories in their complete unabridged form, I know that many pre-teens and teenagers don't. I love Shakespeare's language, but I'd rather young people become familiar with the story and key lines that being forced to read the entire book. The MANGA SHAKESPEARE: ROMEO AND JULIET is a great way to introduce people to the play and hopefully get them excited to read it in its entirety in the future. Recommended for those who have an interest in manga and might be interested in reading and learning about the classics.

One of the best books I have ever read!

When I ordered this book I had not yet heard anything about it. I originally saw it on Facebook. I thought it was a real estate book. I was initially disappointed when i Opened it to find it was a fiction book. I read a lot of business books but never read fiction. I started to read it at about 9:30 pm and stayed up until about 3:30 am to finish it. It was that good. It has really made an impact on my thinking and I am still thinking about this book daily and making the necessary changes. I was definitely pleasantly surprised as I had no expectations going into it. I highly recommend the book!

Good thought, not very well executed

The point of the book is excellent, living your live a different way then that of the world. I agree 100% with all of the content and maybe some people who have not heard the message need this book to get started.

My problem was this book read more like a cheesy teen devotional then an actual fiction book.

Also, while the idea is good, I think that most people could get more detail and action steps from a book like Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover. They are bother similar in content, but Dave's book actually shows you how to take action. Lifeonaire does not give you a good plan on how to get started.

So if you are deep in debt and want a $500,000 boat, you probably shouldn't buy it. In a way, parts of this book is like Suze Orman's "Can I Afford It" where people call in and ask if they can afford ridiculous things even though they're broke.

It also felt like they were self-promoting their seminars which felt a little Guru-ish to me, which I am not a big fan of.

Well told tales

Nursery tales are known pretty well to those of us on Medicare. We know the story, it's the telling that makes the difference.

These are told with the right combination of suspense, danger, compassion, humor and surprise.

They are fun to read and memorable.

Another favorite Richard Scarry "big book" for us

Another favorite Richard Scarry "big book" for us. We love the Busytown series, and all of our children, from the six year old down to the seven month old, love this one. We were familiar with most of the stories (ie, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Bears, and the Billy Goats Gruff), but the Teeny Tiny Woman, which was a new one for us, has especially been a hit. I think it was meant to be kind of a "scary" story, and ended up making us all laugh in the end.

Can't go wrong with Richard Scarry!
