Adult/High School—As a young graduate student fresh off an extended stint following the Grateful Dead, Venkatesh began studying urban poverty. With a combination of an ethnographer's curiosity about another culture and some massive naïveté, he gathered firsthand knowledge of the intricacies of Chicago's Robert Taylor projects. Early on, he met a megalomaniac gang leader known here as J.T., who became his mentor. Venkatesh observed and learned how the crack game works, and how many have their fingers in the pie and need life to remain the way it is. He observed violence, corruption, near homelessness, good cops, bad cops, and a lot of neglect and politics-as-usual. He made errors in judgment—it took a long time for his street smarts to catch up to his book smarts—but he tells the story in such a way as to allow readers to figure out his missteps as he did. Finally, as the projects began to come down, Venkatesh was able to demonstrate how something that seems positive is not actually good for everyone. The first line in his preface, "I woke up at about 7:30 a.m. in a crack den," reflects the prurient side of his studies, the first chapter title, "How does it feel to be black and poor?" reflects the theoretical side, and both work together in this well-rounded portrayal.—Jamie Watson, Harford County Public Library, MD

As a Chicago Native, This Book Intrigued Me

In short, this book is about a student who decided to study poverty in Chicago by actually living in the "ghetto." As a person who has lived in Chicago my whole life, this book was intriguing from the start. I still remember when the Robert Taylor homes were torn down and some of the tenants were dispersed near my hometown of Skokie, so to learn about their previous life was fascinating and humbling. I drive for Uber in Chicago and when I talk with people, particularly University of Chicago (where the author did his research) students, I usually recommend this book.

Really good book

I was required to read this book for class but ended up really enjoying it. It reads as a fictional book however it is very true, as well as eye opening. Not only was this interesting to read but it was also an easy ready. It is about a sociologist who goes to experience the slums and gang life first hand to learn about it. It is so bizarre to read about his exeperience from the inside.

It was a wonderful insight into the reality of living in Chicago from the late 80's to mid 90's. Is the dialogue a little unrealistic? Sure, but in all honesty, I would have grown tired of reading slang, so I'm very grateful that he avoided that route. I am thoroughly looking forward to reading the floating city.
I'm not a terribly slow reader and I'm not the quickest either, but the chapters are long, so be ready for a marathon of reading. It is well worth it though. I feel like I learned a lot about my fellow man and about a class that works hard to remain a family.

Excellent collection of arias for coloratura

This is a wonderfull source for coloratura sopranos. All of your favorite aria in one edition. Very handy when coaching. Does not weigh down your book bag the way full scores do.

Challenging but Manageable

An amateur soprano with an interest in opera, I was first introduced to this series through the Soprano Arias book. However, that book had only a few arias that I was familiar with. This Coloratura Aria set has many famous arias, such as the Queen of the Night's aria from the Magic Flute, Olympia's from Tales of Hoffman, etc. There is a wide variety of languages, including, English, German, French, and Italian. Every aria is translated in the beginning, rather than underneath the original text, preserving the composer's intent.
Moreover, this book presents the challenging arias in a way that makes them more accessible to those of us who may not be professional opera singers. Many of the songs have two options for the ending--either the easier, simple ending, or the more difficult (and often higher) standard cadenza. Most of the songs go up to at least two octaves above middle C, and some even go up to that high F. However, I highly recommend this book for any opera enthusiast or soprano student looking to develop her range.

Hardcore Literature

This is a fantastic book for the genuine coloratura soprano, as well as offering a good selection for light lyrics who are looking to increase their agility and move into the coloratura repertoire. While offering a few easier selections, such as "Poor Wand'ring One," many of these arias are very challenging and should definitely not be undertaken by the beginning singer. It is great to have these blockbuster soprano arias all in one place!

This is a reissue of The Encyclopaedia of Colour for Watercolour Artists that first appeared in 2007. You have to hunt around a bit for that information, but we won't dock any points as they've been honest. Although it has UK origins, there's an American feel, the author is American and you can't help suspect it was originally conceived for that market. There's nothing wrong in that, but you might want to be aware that some of the colours are quite bright and the portraits, landscapes and buildings have a transatlantic air. All that said, it went down well on its original appearance and the book has a pleasantly straightforward approach to a slightly nebulous subject that the author manages to pin down rather successfully. The basic premise is to help you choose what colours are best for your style of painting from the hundreds (even thousands) available, selecting from single-pigments to pre-mixed hues as well as those which granulate, those which are most transparent and a selection of the opaques. All this is done by means of simple spreads with example paintings which are explained and deconstructed with an analysis of the colours that were used. The progression is subject-based, so this isn't one of those books that straitjackets you into choosing your colours before you start to paint, surely one of the most pointless exercises there is. The almost complete lack of step-by-step demonstrations will please many readers and the book has a pleasant feel of serendipity about it as you flick through the pages. The latter half of the book covers different subjects and how to choose not just the correct colours to enhance your subject but how to select the type of colour and which techniques to use to show them at the best effect. I found the section covering New Developments really interesting as it covers metallic paints, something I personally find very exciting and was really interested in reading about how these paints were developed. About the Author

Wonderful and inspiring

It's split into three parts. Section 1 is on understanding pigment properties. Section 2 touches on the colour palettes and schemes. The last section looks at how you can use colours on different subject matters that range from landscapes to portrait drawings.

The text is informative and written in a way that's easy to understand. The pages are nicely laid out with beautiful examples from the author Jan Hart as well as other watercolour artists. You can get to check out different styles and the versatility of watercolour.

I like that the examples show the many possibilities of using colours, especially on putting colours on subjects that you don't normally associate them with. There are a couple of cool demonstrations on how different colour schemes can produce different moods even with the same subject.

There are many tutorials and little exercises scattered around, with lots of tips, ideas and techniques on the different ways you can experiment on your own.

This is an interesting and inspirational book. Even if you're not into watercolour, you might have second thoughts after reading this.

Excellent watercolor resource!

I love this book! Jan provides an clear, logical way to think about color and provides a good foundation for watercolor artists. Jan has a science mind and artist heart, it is a beautiful combination. I was fortunate to take a class from her and this book is a reflection of her teaching style. It is out of print and I was hesitant to add one more book to "my collection of watercolor books", but I'm glad I spent the money.

A '4' corners tool kit

Jan: does her painting in the four corners area. This book covers a lot of possibility, that can be put to use in that wonderful part of the country. She may be addicted to Dan Smith brand paint, but that only helps explain her wonderful use of an outstanding palliate of available watercolor pigments. She is a master of color mixing/application/value selection etc. And she can get her thoughts across to most any intermediate/experienced watercolor painter.

A fun book to spend a few days in the studio (or kitchen table) just trying out her methods. Just copy the art out of the book. I can see that this will be in my permanent collection .

Awwwww

This was a book that made me go awwwwwww! I really liked this story; it’s a step romance with a really good story line. Wes and Robin both have always had a thing for the other, but of course never acted on it because neither knew how the other felt. But after surviving a plane crash everything came to a head and was revealed in a hot and steamy way.

I liked the book from beginning to end and I really enjoyed the build-up between these two. I even enjoyed that both Wes and Robin had technical backgrounds – it must be the engineer in me that enjoys good tech talk.

Stepbrother reading at its best

This is a full length story, not a short length story which is what I am used to reading from Ms. Landish. I really enjoyed this story because, HELLO, it is a stepbrother story. It has such great flow. The story is about 150 pages long. You have the MC of Wes and Robin who has, for years who have flirted back and forth with one another but as right now, nothing seems to come of it. Wes is a former army ranger who has more to his background and Robin who is very a smart woman but has just pretty much had it with her job and just pretty much quit /lost her job. So Wes and Robin decide to take a trip up to Canada and just relax and spend some time together hanging out.
On a life changing trip, they almost die, feelings come out that have been hidden and they both realize they have been hiding who they really are from each other. There is such a great storyline here. I couldn’t put this book down. I enjoyed really getting to know the hidden depth of each of the MC and the little twists that came up toward the end of the book. It was fantastic—The ending was wonderful and wrapped up any questions I had. This is a standalone and passion between the MC is so good. The emotions are so real that it leaps out at you. I loved how alpha Wes is ; and you can feel how submissive Robin became for her man. Outside the bedroom she is Ms. Independent but inside, she is lil ms submissive. This is one hot read. I highly recommend this story and this author.

About the Author

Peter Gottschling is founder of SimuNova, a company that works on developing the Matrix Template Library (MTL4) and offers C++ training. He is a member of the ISO C++ standards committee, vice-chair of Germany’s programming language standards committee, and founder of the C++ User Group in Dresden. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science at Technische Universität Dresden in 2002.

concise, and easy to read with good examples

I just got this book, but taking a brief look at the layout, i can tell i really like this style. It covers the basic language and some of the new features (new as in c++11, c++14) and i like the way it's flagged on the paragraph to let you know that its a part of the newer standard. The examples are pretty short, and i like that. It's not cluttered with 50 pages of text for some example code. So therefore it's more like a great book for me to be in my collection as a quick reference when i need to look up features that i'm not that familiar with, like smart pointers. I got the book as a refresher as my last c++ book was i think the c++03 standard. This book is geared more for scientific programmers, the author briefly points out arithmetic libraries used with c++ for different types of math like differential equations. Although it says it's a book used and taught to beginning students, i think it's an excellent companion book as well. So if you dont like the typical layout of most c++ books, then try this one out. If you need step by step, then i'd say get a different book like lippman's & lajoie's c++ primer or prata's c++ primer plus

My favorite C++ practice and experience book

This may be the best C++ technical book ever. First, let me mention that the typeset text in the paper edition has exquisite highlights in a blueish-purple typeface set against black which makes it very easy to use. I love the annotations which describe features found in C++11 and those found in C++14. There are numerous diagrams, almost like whiteboard sketch's - little visuals - to help with the understanding of detailed language features. I love the editing of Addison-Wesley programming books and this is not an exception, polished, well done and crisp.

The author uses numerous technical algorithms for examples. See his matrix inversion library at [...] as an example.

This is the book to bring your C++ knowledge up to date (mid 2016) with C++11 and C++14 modern development practice. The book has been tested in academia and real world development for three years and covers everything from the tool chain and build process to templates, lambdas and scientific libraries.

The book that talks less and tells more

A good book that don't treat you as some one of low IQ.

I am a Fortran programmer and wanted to learn C++ to get a grip of source codes of OpenFOAM. The topics covered are so enormous that you will take a while to cross each page.

Its concise size of only 444 pages tempts you to carry it always in your bag to help you read it during cup of coffee. A plus point contrasting with all those 900-1200 paged most famous and most expensive books.

Being the first edition, contains few trivial errors. (Such as saying square-root cannot be negative by "mathematics" at section 1.6.1, though his intention of making the program to provide non-negative is meaningful by convention; In section 1.7.3 "myfile" should read "square_file")

As the cover says, it is an intensive course. I am still in third chapter of generic programming which is very crucial for my purpose of understanding OpenFoam codes.
