Great for Review of Grammar

This book is aimed toward the learner who already knows some Mongolian. i did not know this at the time I bought it, but that doesn't change the fact it is a really good text. It helps you review (and perhaps learn some new) grammar. this is it's main focus, and don't expect any conversations, or readings. The lessons are grammar oriented, and they stay that way. There's not much else to the textbook. It's very short and to the point as far as explaining and reviewing the grammar, and there are a lot of exercises throughout.

It's what I've been looking for

I got an email a month or so ago from one Munkhbayar Barmunkh, with a link to the Amazon page which offered Mongolian Grammar. I ordered it immediately.

The author, Khatantuul Baatarsukh, has a BA in International Relations and Slavic Studies from the School of Foreign Services at the National University of Mongolia. It was clearly a labor of love. She says in the Preface, "Writing this book was a daring project, for it has many critics. My motivating force was the love and fascination of the art of language. My inspiration comes from life."

I'm trying to teach myself Mongolian and for this I'm using: a Transparent Language course; listening to Mongolian music via both CDs I've purchased and TsahimRadio, an internet radio station run by a Mongolian Facebook friend; and asking Mongol friends to translate words and phrases for me. I also have the Lonely Planet phrase book, which is dated in some unfortunate ways, but still very useful; and Mongolian/English and English/Mongolian dictionaries that I brought back in July.

There doesn't seem to be much else available that isn't either really expensive or doesn't fit my needs. I haven't diagrammed a sentence since 8th grade (am I dating myself?), but I think this book will be quite helpful.

Mongolian is structured differently than English. The word order is more like German: Subject, object, verb. Verbs are modified by endings, so while I can look up a verb's root word in the dictionary, I've had no idea how to use it correctly in a sentence.

The main problem that I have in learning a language is that I have a visual memory. That is, I store and retrieve information in images, for the most part. It makes remembering things like strings of numbers interesting. So, I find it difficult to make sense out of the terms for cases and how to relate them to anything. I'm hoping this grammar will help me sort that out, one way or another. I may just have to learn it by rote, which is ok, too.

All the text is in English and Mongolian cyrillic, which is almost, but not quite, the same as the Russian alphabet. There are lots of practice exercises, with a key at the back.

This book is not for beginning language students. I know just enough to start to beat my way through some of it. It will go with me on my next trip, though.

While I'm not an expert on languages or language textbooks, I think Mongolian Grammar could easily become the standard offering.

This book is an excellent source of music for the movie, Spirit. My daughter loves the pictures and loves to hear her favorite songs being played on the piano. It is hard to get the book away from her to practice. I do wish there were more pictures. There are just a few. This would not be a good buy if the person is just getting the book for their child to look at the pictures.

These are my FAVORITE songs (from my favorite movie) and I play piano

Firstly, this sheet music is hard to find. All sheet music is, unless you are at a sheet music store, and even then, I hadn't seen it anywhere but the internet when I ordered it.

This paper-back book has all the songs from the Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron soundtrack (as you can tell from the details), as well as a couple of Hans Zimmer's instrumentals.

After ordering this, my only worry was that the piano/vocal/guitar style of music would be a hindrance to playing and/or a compromise to the quality of the sound. This was not the case. The notes sound exact and are not compromised or simplified in any way. This is as exact as transcription gets.

The music is written on three clefs: a vocal line and two piano lines, one for the melody and the other for the harmony. There are also chords written above the staves for those who prefer a less exact, perhaps easier-to-play sound.

A Great book for Datsun lovers!

How To Modify Your Nissan/Datsun OHC Engine was recommended to me when I my husband and I bought my 1968 510 Datsun SCCA race car. The instructions for performing various disassembly/assembly tasks are clear, with a complete parts break-out for every task covered.

This is the only Datsun modification book we own, and I can't imagine needing any other one.

About the Author

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

 

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural and stress analysis work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Chicago.  He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

 

Hibbeler currently teaches both civil and mechanical engineering courses at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

Not the same as hardcover

The paperback version of this book is NOT the same as the hardcover. The paperback version is in black and white, says on the cover that it's only supposed to be distributed in India, is missing tables and example problems, and is not 912 pages as advertised, it's only 876. Inside the cover it says it's an "authorized adaptation" of the actual book.

good as always

just to be clear: I bought the hardcover version that amazon sells ($180). It is brand new and in full color, like the one in the picture. People who are angry over the cheap/bad copies probably got their copy from marketplace sellers that sell international editions.

Hibbeler is the primary author professors go to for pre-engineering. The book is always straightforward with plenty of examples.

PROS:
- the addition of preliminary problems and fundamental problems. They're basically easy problems that don't require that much calculation, but it builds a nice foundation for the harder problems that come later. The solutions to these types are in the back.

CONS: For a 9th edition there are a lot of typos. I'm guessing Hibbeler was pressured by the publisher to come out with this edition by a certain deadline. Still, it doesn't take away from you actually learning the material, so no biggie. I'm just bitter because I had to spend almost 200 bucks for a freaking book.

if you bought hibbeler's statics&dynamics 13e book you can see my rant on the similarity between editions. The same goes here. As always publishers are looking to make more money off broke students, so even though not much has changed since the last edition, you still have this book that covers the exact same material but with a different cover picture. If your professor uses mastering engineering, or doesn't use the problem sets from this book at all, then save your money and buy the 8th edition for like 20 bucks.

Great Value, but Watch Out for These Points!

Seems to be an accurate duplication of the much more expensive hardcover version. However, some important differences to note are:

-The entire contents are black and white (a graph referring to a red line and a blue line is difficult to understand)

-There aren't any reference formulas or moduli in the front or back cover of the book. (several homework problems require this information.)
