The covers of this book are too far apart
By Demon3
I am stunned that this book is so highly regarded. I read the first 99 pages to discover they had virtually no content other than telling you that EQ is important and telling you what it is. Finally, the content started at page 100 and even then, it was mostly common sense ideas like breath properly, get some exercise and a tip to get help from people with higher EQ than yourself. I didn't buy a book only to have it tell me to look elsewhere for the actual help. The book is purported to do that. If you are looking for something revelatory to help you then this book isn't it. What a waste of time. If you want a book that really delivers I can recommend The Charisma Myth. Now that is special.

We need to read more books like this in high school.
By lauriej
I really wish I had read this book in high school and better yet had a course in it. It would have saved me a lot of grief. As a society, we need to teach children how to deal with emotions. I wish I had not taken it out of the library because the code in the back only works for one person. So, I was not able to take the EQ (Emotional Intelligence)test. I may need to buy the book.

I loved it all, but I have picked out my favorite parts of each section:

Self Awareness Strategies:

1. Ask others for feedback about how you handle your emotions and listen carefully to what they say.
2. Weekly or bi-weekly take stock of your life and write down situations that you didn't deal with well and then list which quality that you wanted to honor but didn't. For example:
Honesty is the quality and then write down a situation that I didn't handle well where I wasn't completely honest. The next time a situation like this comes up, I might deal with it differently because I will remember the list.

Self Management Strategies:

1. To prepare for change, make a list of things in my life that could possibly change and write down ideas for how I could deal with that. I really enjoyed doing this and it really has been helpful.

Social Awareness Strategies:

1. Become a great observer. Learn how to sense the mood of a room and check to see if your observations are correct.
1. Listen. Listen. Listen. Don't interrupt.

Relationship Management Strategies:

1. Use these phrases more: "I am sorry." "Please" "Thank You"

Fabulous book. I highly recommend it.

good but missing some information
By M Frenzel
Generally very good however I found the material regarding violence exhibited by battered children misleading. If certain behavior is expected it will be found, however violence is predicted by interviews with criminals who having been caught committing violent crimes blame someone else, (not surprising among sociopaths - blaming someone else is to be expected as not taking responsibility for their behavior is a qualifying characteristic) however taking at face value this information and giving it the credibility of scientific evidence is to give sociopaths more than they merit. As a battered child I am critical of the first presumption that we will be violent, a vicious disservice as after having suffered battering, we become suspect of being perpetrators, truly blaming the victim. I think the author needs to have better work on battered/presumed violent children. For example some professionals believe they are less violent, rather terrified of causing to anyone the pain they experienced, therefore continue to be victims, inviting others to victimize them as well, an aspect not usually investigated, but badly needs to be investigated.

Very Well Written Book on Truss Design.
By Amazon Customer
This book is a more modern version of the Simplified Design series that was originally written by Harry Parker and updated by James Ambrose. Mr. Ambrose covers a lot of historical matter about trusses in this book, which is oddly helpful for me with work I do with older buildings. He covers all of the different types of trusses, and gets into detail about common timber and steel trusses.

His analysis and design sections are well written. A lot of structural engineering texts have very turgid language making it hard to decipher the simplest concepts, but Mr. Parker covers in plain every day language how to design a truss that makes the process very simple. The figures are easy to understand, and he gives easy to understand examples. What I found helpful is that he covers vertical trusses extensively and how to analyze them. Vertical trusses are very good for resisting wind loads, and this is the first text I've found to cover them specifically in such detail.

What makes this text more valuable is he covers in detail how to design the connections of trusses. With wood trusses there are a lot of factors to take into account, and he goes through it step by step. He also covers issues such as the loading of top chords of trusses from the vertical live and dead loads, which is often ignored in other texts. Finally, he gets into graphic analysis of trusses, which was done in the days before electronic calculators and then personal computers. I kind of skipped over that part.

I actually sat and read through the text in one evening, which is not something one normally can do with an engineering text. If you are designing trusses, this is a must have book for your library.

Buy this book. You'll find it very useful. It has comprehensive and clear explanations
By Fernando A. Medina
The books of the Ambrose serie generally are very good. This book is not the exception.
The Chapter 10 "Design of Steel Trusses" includes Joints in Steel Trusses (very well explained), an important aspect in the design, forgotten for the majority of the designers and structural engineers, but essential in the stability and perfomance of the a truss
In the chapter 16 reviews different forms of trusses searching the maximum efficiency.
This book is a "must have" publication .
You can purchase with security. It will be very useful in your daily work

Very nice primer on truss design and development
By R. Alembik
This book is not written by a Pulitzer prize winning author, but it is still very readable. It spoon feeds the technology well enough for an armchair understanding by any "victim" of liberal arts. I'm not sure if the technology is totally up to date because of its mid-90's publication date. But, unless you're actually an engineer or architect relying on the science that's discussed, then it's a very good product.

A true story about why we sabotage ourselves, feel overwhelmed, set aside our dreams, and lack the courage to simply be ourselves... and how to start choosing happiness again!

Are you happy? It may be the wrong question. Most of us think we are relatively happy, while at the same time knowing that we could be happier -- maybe even a lot happier. Ordinary people and the finest philosophers have been exploring the question of happiness for thousands of years, and theories abound. But this is not a book of theory. Are you overwhelmed? Do you procrastinate? Do you sometimes feel like you are your own worst enemy? Are you ignoring your dreams? Have you lost the courage to truly be yourself? Do you feel that your life lacks meaning and purpose? Do you find yourself avoiding the real issues in your life and focusing on the superficial?

We all experience these feelings and doubts from time to time. But do you know what to do when you experience them? In this fascinating book, Matthew Kelly, uses his signature combination of the profound and the practical, to help us understand why we feel these things and how to rise above them.
Breaking through resistance, Kelly tells us, is essential to becoming the-best-version-of-ourselves and living with passion and purpose.

What is resistance? It's that sluggish feeling of not wanting to do something that you know is good for you. It's the inclination to do something that you unabashedly know is not good for you. It's the desire and tendency to delay something you should be doing right now.

It is resistance that stands between you and happiness. In these pages you will learn not only what it is, but how to recognize and conquer it in your own life.

This book is awesome! It smacks you in the face with some truth. If you are tired of not being happy and will actually put the effort into being happy, it will do wonders. So many things, that may seem obvious to some, can keep you from true peace and happiness. Thank you Matthew Kelly, I hope I can implement this in my life for a long time, but that resistance can really get you down. Just gotta slay the dragon!!

Hide-and-Seek with Angels: A Life of J. M. Barrie, by Lisa Chaney

What kind of man creates a boy who never grows up? More than 100 years after Peter Pan first appeared on the London stage, author J. M. Barrie remains one of the most complex and enigmatic figures in modern literature. A few facts, of course, are widely known: Peter Pan made Barrie the richest author of his time, and he bequeathed the royalties to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children. He was married, but later divorced, and he was devoted to the orphaned sons of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, one of whom was named Peter. And then the rumors begin--about the nature of his marriage; about his precise relationship with the Davies boys, whose guardian he became; about the fantasies and demons that determined his achievements.

In this brilliant biography, Lisa Chaney goes beyond the myths to discover the fascinating, frequently misunderstood man behind the famous boy. James Matthew Barrie was born in a village in Scotland in 1860, the ninth of 10 children of a linen-weaver and his wife. When James was six years old, his older brother died in a skating accident, and his mother began her withdrawal into grief. It is not an exaggeration to say that Barrie's entire life--both his professional triumphs as a writer and his personal tragedies--led up to the creation of Peter Pan, the play where "all children except one grow up." As Lisa Chaney explores Barrie's own struggles to grow up, she deepens our understanding both of his most famous character and of the complex relationship between life and art.

From Booklist
Obsessed with time and mortality, James Barrie created in Peter Pan a myth with enduring, worldwide appeal. Chaney thoughtfully examines Barrie's inner life from childhood in Kirriemuir, Scotland, to wild, international success. She describes young James as unexceptional, small for his age, but "cheerful enough," though not much was expected of him. When beloved elder brother David died accidentally, James perfected David's mannerisms and wore his clothes to assuage his grieving mother--unsuccessfully. Even that early, he was a natural storyteller who needed to perform and make himself visible. But when he announced he wanted to be a writer, his parents were flabbergasted. Later, after Barrie moved to London and achieved fame and fortune, Kirriemuir represented for him all that was good and wholesome, and he returned to it again and again. Chaney discusses Barrie's work (many successful novels and plays), ill-fated marriage, complex mother-son relationship, friendship with Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her sons, and the origins and evolution of his masterpiece so as to bring to life a most complicated, enigmatic, and melancholy man. a satisfying life of an underrated author
By Paul Britton
After I've gotten to know an author, I generally get the urge to find out whether his life matches up with my notions. Thus, the publication of Lisa Chaney's "A Life of James Barrie" was especially timely for me, since I've been systematically working through Barrie's novels and plays over the last couple of years. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to become aware of his body of work.

Barrie's importance stretches far beyond "Peter Pan," and Chaney gives due attention to other stages of his life and to his many other literary and dramatic successes. She falls occasionally into amateur psychoanalysis, but Barrie was so eccentric that I can hardly blame her. Her prose is straightforward and does not distract (although her book contains a surprising number of spelling errors, mostly the sort of thing that spellcheck programs don't pick up, like "it's" versus "its"). Her biography of this literary craftsman is more than satisfying.

I was pleased to learn from Chaney about Barrie's friendships with Thomas Hardy and other luminaries like Arthur Conan Doyle, R. L. Stevenson, H. G. Wells, and George Meredith. However, Chaney makes little effort to relate Barrie's work to that of his contemporaries, other than to contrast "Peter Pan" with other prominent works of children's literature. There was surely more to be said; personally, I could not help linking Barrie's early "A Window in Thrums," a book of tender episodes in the lives of rustic Scots, to Hardy's "Under the Greenwood Tree," an episodic early novel containing affectionate portrayals of English rustics. And given their friendship, was it coincidence that Hardy abandoned novel-writing for poetry about the same time that Barrie abandoned novel-writing for drama?

By the time of his last novel, "The Little White Bird," Barrie had achieved a degree of control over language and tone that, in my view, would be surpassed only by E. M. Forster and P. G. Wodehouse. He had an ear for dialect to rival Hardy's. The half-dozen best of his ingenious and felicitous plays, gems like "The Admirable Crichton" and "What Every Woman Knows," not to mention "Peter Pan," will last as long as Shaw's. J. M. Barrie is an underrated writer, and this biography was well merited.

"The Puppet Master In Control"
By The Wingchair Critic
Lisa Chaney's excellent, insightful 'Hide-And-Seek with Angels: A Life of J. M. Barrie' (2005) offers readers a broader view of the Scottish writer's life than can be found in Andrew Birkin's classic 'J. M. Barrie & the Lost Boys: The Love Story That Gave Birth To Peter Pan' (1979). Though Barrie's obsessive relationship with the Llewelyn Davies boys is not the primary focus of Chaney's biography, the physically unassuming Barrie is, over the course of the biography, nonetheless exposed as having been a domineering, shrewd, and deceitful arch-manipulator who cloaked his motives and emotional neediness in financial generosity and elaborate, ostensibly good manners.

Despite Barrie's many novelistic and theatrical achievements, and the fact that he was a self-made man of modest origin, the question of Barrie's divided, willful, and often poisonous character dominates his life story; though in time Barrie came to be seen as a noble being in the eyes of the masses ("the British public had long since taken him to their heart...he could meet anyone he choose, anything he did was news, and the honors continued to be awarded"), much of his personal behavior reflects differently on this estimation.

Though Chaney astutely examines the social and sexual mores of Victorian and Edwardian England, which she contrasts with those of the present day, and doesn't find Barrie's behavior towards the Llewelyn Davies boys intrinsically suspicious, Chaney's emphasis on overt sexual desire and genital contact perhaps misses the point. Though no hard evidence that Barrie was actively pedophiliac exists, it is possible that Barrie was pedophiliac by nature, even if he never acted upon his desires with the Llewelyn Davies boys or any others. Some unusual, perhaps abnormal, psychic factor certainly fueled his ambitions where the family was concerned.

Thought simply asexual by many--and with good reason, since his marriage to actress Mary Ansell was never consummated--Barrie smoothly insinuated himself into the daily lives of the Llewelyn Davies family, even though he knew his smothering presence was resented, to varying degrees and at different periods, by husband and father Arthur, and sons Jack and Peter.

The truth is that Barrie didn't care whether or not he was unwanted, initially or thereafter. Year after year, he slowly took control of the family wherever and whenever he saw an opportunity, until the boy's lives were almost completely under his management. Revealing the same kind of telling disrespect to mother Sylvia after her death that he showed to father Arthur in life, Barrie even went to far as to deceitfully alter a copy of Sylvia's will to give extended family members the impression that he was the party Sylvia had selected to become the children's guardian after her passing.

Though Barrie obviously bore no responsibility for the cancer that killed both Arthur and Sylvia early in their lives, nor for son George's death in World War One, Barrie may have played an indirect role in the death of favorite boy Michael, who, as a young man, drowned with a friend at Oxford in what may have been a homosexual suicide pact (brother Peter committed suicide at 63). The handsome, sensitive Michael loved Barrie, but had begun to resent Barrie's almost total control over his life. Since childhood, Michael had suffered from terrible nightmares (that were often assuaged by a vigilant Barrie), which may very well have been an unconscious response to "Uncle Jim's" slow, methodical, and passive-aggressive takeover of his family and usurpation of patriarch Arthur's role. If at any time Michael suffered from doubt, confusion, and fear about the nature of his sexuality, Barrie's particular brand of affection may only have exacerbated those feelings.

Chaney's own theory, that Barrie, "in that peculiar shelter between the conscious and the unconscious" desperately melded Michael with his memories of himself from his own emotionally troubled childhood, also reflects a grasping attachment that Michael may have intuitively sensed as parasitic. Unsurprisingly, later in their lives, both Jack and Peter expressed their view that Barrie's strange, far-reaching influence on their family was intrusive at best and unwholesome, perhaps even baleful, at worst.

As fate would have it, final happiness with the Llewelyn Davies family eluded Barrie, and the tragic events of all of their lives meant that Barrie lost early the three members that he loved most dearly--Sylvia, George, and Michael--while the relatively unfavored sons--Jack, Peter, and Nicholas--oddly enough--married, had children, and lived well into adulthood.

The Power of Belief
By Philip W. Henry
Hide-and-Seek With Angels: A life of J.M. Barrie
By Lisa Chaney

J.M. Barrie was an extraordinary man who lived in extraordinary times. Although he is remembered largely for his classic story of childhood and belief, Peter Pan,¨ he was one of the leading literary lights at a time when giants like Robert Louis Stevenson, Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle, George Bernard Shaw, and H.G. Wells dominated British literature.
Stevenson wrote from Samoa that Henry James, Kipling and Barrie were his "muses."
Barrie was enormously successful as a playwright, amassing a fortune which he bequeathed, characteristically, to a children's hospital.

But his life was marked by tragedy: the premature death of his sister, his friend George Meredith, and a failed and likely unconsummated marriage. In her excellent biography,
"Hide and Seek with Angels," Lisa Chaney examines Barrie's childhood with a domineering mother and a wimpy father (and we all know what that leads to); his education; first attempts at literature, and strange affection for children. Barrie was complex: sometimes charming, sometimes aloof and threatening; confusing and perplexing.
Not having read Andrew Birkin's "JM Barrie and The Lost Boys" (it's not in our library system), I can't compare the two books. But Barrie's obsessive relationship with the orphaned boys...which continued through their adolence... is touched on although not excessively.

"Herein lies the profound difference between Barrie and the other great writers for children. All of them --Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll, Rudyard Kipling, Kenneth Grahame, Beatrix Potter, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl--no matter how subversive
or anarchic their worlds, wrote stories that include the idea of negotiating with and becoming adult. No matter how impious or irreverent, they all acknowledge time. But in Peter Pan it is unavoidably clear that at the deepest level Barrie¡¦s little hero refuses to grow up. He fears the very qualities of adulthood, and this is Barrie¡¦s dilemma.¡¨
(Hide and Seek with Angels,P. 237)

Hide and Seek With Angels¡ is a remarkably complete, well-researched, and well- presented biography of a difficult subject.

Great photo reference for Griswold Collectors
By A. Bettik
I'm just getting started collecting Griswold cast iron, and I bought this guide recently because I wanted some sort of reference point for assessing cast iron at auctions, flea markets, antique malls, etc. I'm not a dealer, and (so far, anyway) I don't purchase or sell any cast iron on-line.

I really like this guide, since it's descriptive, inclusive, and has photos and illustrations which are more than sufficient for determining what you're looking at when you're standing over the vendor's table. The major complaint that I've read about this guide is that the prices haven't been updated. That's true - it says right in the front of the book that the prices were gathered in 1995, even though this is the fifth edition and has supposedly been revised a few times since. But, I get the impression from what I'm seeing in the marketplace that, whether due to this book itself or due to the market for cast iron, the prices quoted are still fairly accurate for most pieces. At any rate, it still serves as a great relative pricing guide, to tell you how the various pieces compare to each other. People have said that the prices quoted in here are not reflective of on-line auctions for cast iron, though whether they're generally lower or generally higher, I don't know. Since I'm not buying or selling on-line, I can't really comment, but I do know that on-line bidders have a tendency to go haywire sometimes. These seem to me to be accurate prices for antique malls or flea markets, though. A few people have complained about the quality of the photos, but I think that this is a baseless complaint, since the photos and illustrations are very clear and easily sufficient to distinguish one piece from another. The authors even show a few select counterfeits, and do a side-by-side comparison of the genuine piece versus the counterfeit. They also included a nice informative blurb about the history of each company which is represented in this guide, and a list of part numbers for each line which is invaluable if you're trying to tell just what it is you're looking at. I wish I could give it four and a half stars - it deserves the extra half. I'd give it a fifth star if they'd put a little more effort into detailing some of the diagnostic features typical to pans of a specific vintage - I'm still a little in the dark about just which handle is the "old handle" and which handle is the "new handle," given that I've seen at least four or five handle styles on these pans, and I'd like to know a bit more about some of the skillets which were manufactured by Griswold but don't say "Griswold." such as Victors and Puritans, etc. The authors do give full pricing and photograhic information for those makes, but they don't really give any information about why they exist or why they don't say "Griswold" on them.

By the way, this review is mostly focused on Griswold. I don't collect Wagner, Favorite, Sidney Hollow-ware, or Wapak. On the whole, I would say that even though I don't collect these brands, this is a very good guide for Wagner as well, and an alright guide for the other three brands. Favorite, Sidney Hollow-ware, and Wapak don't get nearly the attention that Griswold and Wagner get in this book, but I get the impression that those companies weren't as successful and didn't have quite the diversity of products in the first place that Griswold or Wagner did.

Very pleased.

Excellent book
By kp
I am not new at collecting cast iron but i did not have any reference material to refer to until i bought this book. I was not interested in selling, just in buying at garage sales, etc. This book is excellent as far as i am concerned. True, everything that Griswold and Wagner made is not pictured or referenced in the book but it sure gives a good idea of what era and their price for a lot of their products. I don't have much experience with pricing, i have read other reviews that say the values in the book is not correct as compared to prices on the internet. Well, you can look on the internet and compare if you like and adjust the value, but the book gives a good idea of a particular pan made by one manufacturer compared to the same pan made by the other. It has helped me get an idea of value and if i want to sell something i can look on the internet and get an idea of the prices there compared to the book and extrapolate a price that is pretty close to what i have. If someone knows of a better book let us know. I purchased it from Amazon and it came in 4 days and in excellent condition.

outdated in *pieces*, astounding as a whole
By J from NY
"I'm glad this philosophy never caught on, otherwise we'd all be Existentialists (meaning a 90% chance we'd never mature past freshman year of university-level I-think-I'm-so-cool-I-worship-Sartre mentality, since 90% of Exies I know of fit that description)."
The first reviewer's comments could almost be a sort of tragic addendum to Cooper's text; his talk of "maturity" confirms with an unconscious vengeance everything Cooper discusses in the book.
Yes, Cooper may have quoted Sartre one too many times; but in this astounding and painfully enlightening work we find an original voice, over and apart from his contemporaries. Cooper is speaking not only to our conscious, intellectual or philosophical selves--he is tapping into the subconscious.
"Openness means pain, and, despite attentive kindness and help and clarification that one may get from other people, the pain ultimately has to be suffered alone. It is from this position of solitude that the ultimate clarification must come. Make no mistake about it, other people will always sense, even without realizing what they sense, when someone in the group has been through this sort of self confrontation. It would be fatuous to speak of communes without the presence in the group of, in the first instance, at least the person who has rigorously enough dealt with his life in these terms (pg 46)."
Confident enough to generalize here, I would say that anyone who denies the singular brilliance of this passage has thrown the baby out with bathwater--that is, they unconsciously deny the very real kind of liberation Cooper writes of before actually reading the book. (Case in point: Reviewer Number One).
Cooper goes onto illustrate the System of Guilt so prevalent in our society, which prevents any true self realization and condemns us to a life of stagnation and mechanical responses engendered by fear. Cooper has the intuitive, not only intellectual, honesty to understand and admit the nearly insufferable pain which results from true self examination: abandonment, despair, the whole host of human emotions which absolutely must be worked through lest we endanger our chances of self realization. Like the greatest of revolutionary authors, he exhorts us to dissolve the self-image, which now (far more so than when Cooper wrote this) governs our society and the better part of our day to day behavior, insulating us within walls which one day, if we persist in our neurotic non-communication, may become insurmountable.
Yes, of course: the talk of communes and Marxism are no longer relevant. Some of this is a time piece, and some it rivals and even surpasses the work of oft-touted 60's gurus like Herbert Marcuse, R.D. Laing, and (of course) Timothy Leary. One need not be an "existentialist" or anything of the sort to understand, experientially, the message of this book.

An astonishing assault on one of society's sacred cows
By A Customer
David Cooper, one of the grand old men of existential psychiatry, delivers a withering assault on the family from an individualist perspective. "Bringing up a child," he says, "is bringing down a person"; the family teaches us to live "agglutinatively," hence pathologically, rooting our identity in our birth milieu instead of in who we are as individuals.
It's hard to find books that recognize that the family -- modern society's bedrock institution -- has critical problems which themselves underlie so many of our social problems.
Written in the 70s, the book has a streak of Marxist jargon that contemporary readers may find distracting. But look past that -- beneath it is as pure and radical a call to tear down the family and all the "subtle violence" it works on the individual that you will ever read.

Death
By Conan
One of the craziest books I ever read. Calls for the radical extermination of the nuclear family, even by violence. I believe the author wound up in a lunatic asylum, though I am unable to remember whether by choice. A colleague of R.D. Laing, and like Laing a Marxist.

Very Last First Time, by Jan Andrews

Eva Padlyat lived in an Inuit village on Ungava Vat in northern Canada. In winter, when people wanted mussels to eat, they searched along the bottom of the seabed. Eva had often walked on the bottom, helping her mother, but today – for the very first time – she was to go down below the thick sea ice herself. Her mother went with her to the shore and out onto the ice. The time was just right. The outgoing tide had pulled the seawater away, leaving only the ice above and the rock-strewn seabed below.
Eva lowered herself through a hole in the ice and, by candlelight, had soon gathered a pan full of mussels. There was still time to explore, she decided. But she stumbled and her candle went out. She was alone in the darkness, and the tide had turned. When, at the end of her adventure, she is safe with her mother again on top of the ice, she says, "that was my very last first time for walking alone on the bottom of the sea."

From Publishers Weekly
In search of mussels while the tide is out, an Inuit girl walks alone beneath the ice of the frozen ocean, knowing she will never do it-for the first time-again. Pointillist paintings in purple and yellow emphasize the beauty of her undersea adventure. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Eva Padlyat had often walked on the bottom of the sea with her mother. This extraordinary-sounding feat is routine for the Inuits of Northern Canada, who lower themselves through the thick winter ice at low tide to search for mussels on the ocean floor. It is now time for Eva's first trip under the ice alone. She and her mother pull their sleds across the snow until they find a place to chisel a hole; then Eva carefully lowers herself into the darkness. Lighting a candle, she begins to look for mussels; she then goes exploring. When she hears the tide coming in and drops her candle, she feels panicky, but she soon finds her matches and another candle to light her way back to the ice hole. On the surface of the ice once again, Eva sums up her adventure as her "very last first time" for walking alone on the ocean floor. This look at Eskimo life today combines the ancient custom of collecting mussels with modern features such as airplanes and snowmobiles. The story is well-developed, with just the right amount of suspense. The watercolor illustrations are somewhat uneven in quality; the colors in the land scenes are rather garish, and some figures are awkwardly proportioned. The eerie shades of the ocean floor are quite effective, however, and the strange seascapes lend an air of unreality. Very Last First Time is an intriguing view of a little-known way of life. A Fascinating Story that I found through Five In a Row
By Learning All The Time
My children (1st & 2nd grade) really love this book. The premise had them leaping off the bed in amazement - "She goes under the SEA??? The ice is over her HEAD???? She goes by HERSELF????"

Every detail was interesting to them - the tools used to hack under the ice, the mother letting her child go alone, the small Inuit homes, Eva living in a land where no trees grew - and they had so many questions - most of which were answered by the end of the story.

We used the book to talk about:

1. mussels and how they grow & live,

2. tides, what causes them and how much the water level can vary between high tide and low tide,

3. the climate in northern Canada

4. the Inuits,

5. emergencies - what happens initially to our bodies when we are afraid, and what we should try to do so that we can get out of our emergency safely, and

6. pointillism and the artist Seraut, and we made our own pointillism art masterpieces with Q-tips and paint.

I did search the Internet for actual photographs of what Eva might have seen, but I couldn't find a single one! I couldn't find other references to the Inuit walking under the ice either. I would have loved to have shown those to my children.

Wonderful - a genuine adventure for young girls.
By A Customer
This is one of the best books for young girls that I have come across. A young Inuit girl is sent under the ice at low tide to collect muscles for the family.. this time by herself. She gets distracted, the candles burn out leaving her in darkness just as she starts to hear the water returning. What an adventure. I buy this book as a gift whenever I need a present for a beginner reader girl.
