Artifacts A Plenty in this Delightful New Offering in the HP Vault series

I own all of the Harry Potter Vault series and they are each worth every penny spent. THE ARTIFACT VAULT provides fans and anyone who is interested in the films and books a closer look into the conceptualization of many of the amazing, magical and non-magical objects of the Harry Potter world as depicted in the stories and how these objects were designed for use in the films. These include early concept art, illustrations, behind-the-scenes photos and many more.

If like me, you are a devoted fan that just loves all things Potter, you will delight in the many tidbits of information about the process in which these artifacts were brought to the screen. For example, Ravena Ravenclaw's diadem went through several iterations before it finally made it to the big screen in its present form (one of my favorite Horcruxes btw), and the Resurrection Stone too had to be re-imagined in order to remain faithful to author J.K. Rowling's conceptualization.

There is so much material here to delight fans - I had always wanted to see close-ups of the paintings decorating Hogwarts Castle and here you get to see many of them with detailed explanations. That's the beauty of this book - you can just peruse the photos if that's your thing, or you can devour every morsel of information, like me. Thanks to Jody Revenson and the publisher for delivering a winner once again!

Harry Potter: The Artifact Vault

The Elder Wand. The Marauder's Map. The Sword of Gryffindor. These items, along with so many others, are essential to Harry Potter. The film series is a visual spectacle. Every frame is rich with meticulous detail, and the wizarding world allows for some unique design elements.

"Harry Potter: The Artifact Vault" contains just about everything you'd want to see close up from the films. If you are interested in production design, set decoration, or similar aspects of filmmaking then you've got to see this book for yourself. As a Harry Potter fan, I was already quite familiar with how much effort went into designing the films - but the book has so many different artifacts in such great detail that it's impossible not to be impressed.

All the important artifacts central to the story are here: everything from Harry's Hogwarts acceptance letter to the the three Deathly Hallows. But you also get to see background items that aren't necessarily central to the films, but nonetheless help to further immerse the viewer in the magical world. Examples include the paintings in the halls of Hogwarts, potion collections, and the food at the Yule Ball feast. Everything is printed here in great detail for your inspection.

The most common type of imagery are pictures of the artifacts themselves; although there is also plenty of concept art, storyboards, etc. The team at Harper Design did an excellent job assembling and publishing this book. Images are very clear and are printed large enough for detail to emerge.

but what I really like about this book is that it gives you a ...

I already have A Guide to the Graphic Arts Department from the Stage to Screen Collector's edition and this book reminds me of that. Of course they're two completely different books, but what I really like about this book is that it gives you a close up look at certain newspaper ads and other things from the films while also giving you a description of each "artifact". I also really like the bonus insert of the Black family Tapestry from the films.

Not sure if it breaks new ground or rehashes the same old ground... time will tell

I like Yuri, he has some cutting edge stuff, but I'm not sure this is all it's cracked up to be.

It all comes down to not eating wheat or dairy, and repeating a 5 day cycle of meal patterns that work out to a calorie deficit, and exercising.

Some parts are contradictory, like telling you to not eat dairy, but then telling you that yogurt would neither help nor hurt your efforts...?
He doesn't have you count calories because he says they aren't really all that important - but then a bit later puts you on a portion plan counting portions the size of thumb, palm, hand, etc. which amounts to the same thing.

Not sure I want to forego bread, pasta, milk, cheese, and the rest - and live on quinoa forever.

Strangely, it's gotten 19 five star reviews, and it's only been in print 2 days.

There's NO WAY anyone could have tried it for the full 21 days, when it's only been out for two, eh?

So, that many positive reviews could have hardly come from anyone who has actually tried the program, unless they had prior exposure.

Yuri's followers and his test group comes to mind here.
He's asked them to review the book, when it was only out there less than a day.
Based on what?

In any case, the take home lesson seems to be to cycle your carbs, fast a day in 5, exercise, and don't eat wheat or dairy.
Oh, and eat when you are hungry, stop when you are 80% full.

You'll lose the fat no matter what you do, if you fast every few days, never eat past 80% full, and exercise. No magic there.

On the plus side, it's an inspiring read, a metabolism based diet and exercise approach, and parts are interesting.
If the message is new to you, Yuri's book is worth a read.

It works for me

I was one of the beta testers last December. I wanted to lose the last 5 lbs that had stuck with me since having children. Instead, in 21 days - straight through the Christmas season - I lost 10 lbs and dropped to 21% body fat. I dropped 2 pants sizes. More importantly, throughout the following months, I grew increasingly stronger. I'd never been able to do a "real" push up and by March, I could do 20. As a 40-yr-old woman with 3 children, who has always hated exercise, that was an accomplishment. I highly recommend this program.

Worth Getting and Trying

I like it. My husband and I followed the first week of the plans, and ate everything as written, even though it was quite the adjustment (I am not much of a meat eater and do not like quinoa; hubby is a burger and fries guy). On day 8 we at one "old habit" meal of our choice, and then went right back on the 21 day plan.
The portions are huge.
The flavors are quite good.
I am concerned about the amount of butter, oil and avocado in here when my doctor already asked me to limit these things, but I am not a nutritionist nor do I have a degree in food science.
All in all, it has been a good way so far to get away from flour, sugar, dairy as a family habit.

For those who balk at the beta-testing reviews, they're normal in all book releases and not fishy. It is the process of doing business in the publishing world these days. Wonderful Holiday Book!!

The Biggest series is super adorable I love them and so do my 5 children, I like to read how the 2 little mice always seem to work out the problem in the end of each story. The illustrations are wonderful so are the length of the books. Some books now can look small but be jammed with words. Being over wordy in a children's book is not good. These books are not too wordy they give details, spike your attention every page. The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever by Steve Kroll is great for children 3 and up. We recommend you put them on your Christmas list!

Simple and entertaining

This is almost a version of city mouse country mouse, except these two friends from different families, come together and work together to make everyone happy. I liked the way the two main characters have their story told, side by side, allowing children to see the clear similarities. A nice story which became a fast favourite with the kids (3yrs & 6yrs).

I don't even know how many editions of this book have been published over the years, but they are all more or less identical enough to be interchangeable as far as I can tell. Perhaps the newer versions have slightly modified quantities, expanded instructions, or something like that, but you can pick up any edition of it and you know it will be a classic. This is one of the best, most exhaustive compendiums of more traditional Southwestern cooking that I've been able to find, and is my exclusive go-to when I want to make New Mexico style food. The instructions are brief, but descriptive, and the recipes are simple to conceptualize and follow. If you want a great compendium of family-style Southwestern food, look no further.

I grew up with this cook book- my mother's shows almost 30 years of use (food stains, broken binder, etc.). It is definitely well loved. It's a classic in any Southwest home and/or someone who loves authentic southwestern food. No frills but easy to follow. I hate cookbooks but THIS is one I have and use.

One of few recipe books that has natillas and so many other cool, unique dishes. Nom nom nom.

Excellent book for adult learners

As an adult who has been studying French for 5+ years and who is competent in both grammar and vocabulary, I find this book very helpful to my conversational skills. Lots of phrases, expressions and idioms that are useful and easy to incorporate into my heretofore formal sentences. Pertinent grammar reviews without overdoing what I already know. My teacher (who taught French for 25 years in an Atlanta private school) loves the book as do other of her more advanced students.

Intermediate Level ~ Great for Review

This book is great for review. You learn to speak contemporary French and common expressions.

I think it would be difficult for a beginner to just dive in. It's geared for intermediate students says the publisher. I like the content of the conversations, the French turns of phrase it teaches, and the smattering of grammar review it provides.

Agree with others that auditory would be nice. However, if you're familiar with French pronunciation, it's not absolutely necessary and might raise the price.

I'm using this for review over the summer to pick up some common phrases and way of speaking.

While I am sure the book, in book form is very good, in Kindle form it is useless.
One can increase the size of the font to one letter a page, but the examples and tests stay absolutely minute!
Therefore, it's a total waste of money.

This book added nothing new to my knowledge of NLP. A majority of the book was spent stating and re-stating why it was controversial and the topic itself was barely covered. It was badly written and full of grammatical and typographical errors.

Obvious, overly-simplified, condescending trafe

Book added nothing to my knowledge of NLP and alas confirmed my long-held suspicion that its practitioners think the rest of us are beyond stupid, which I guess would be the case if we were dumb enough to fall for this blindingly obvious, overly-simplified view of what can only by a real stretch be called negotiation. Can any of you say "Law School" - this is far below the level of Negotiation 101 - even below Improv in Theatre Studies. Do not waste your time.

Some Good Tips But Overall a Rip-Off

Rip-off. It has some good tips for rapport building with others, but the self mastery tips are just common sense. It also talks about some interesting and powerful dark NLP techniques in the intro WHICH IT DOES NOT GO INTO LATER ON--very disappointing!!!!
Based on my other readings on NLP, this author does in fact demonstrate knowledge in NLP but he doesn't tell you how to use them very well. He just gives you a very elementary overview of the concepts so it's pretty much pointless.
Not worth the money. Don't buy it.

This book is beautifully photographed and really takes you inside the life of an FTM. I would recommend this book to anyone that is going through a rough time with gender identity and loved ones that may have questions about the transitioning process.These photos and stories are emotional and beautiful. The before and after photos are absolutely incredible.

Scales are not fun but form the foundation of all music understanding. This is an excellent book providing many exercises in all the foundational principles of music. Regardless of what instrument played, all good musicians benefit from a strong understanding and mastery of the content of this book.

Excellent Scales Book!

The Alfred Complete Book Of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios and Cadences is an extraordinarily well put together format. They spend the first dozen or so pages explaining the theory behind how scales and chords are put together. They do indicate that they are best learned by practice, but the theory at the beginning of the book is an excellent resource.
They formatted the scales extraordinarily well. Starting around page 16 you start the key of C Major, with every major and minor scale following that as well as two pages of Chromatic scales at the end, a page on harmonizing the scales, a page with blocked scales and accelerating scales followed by Expanding scales, and scales in double thirds, double sixths and octaves. After that they have Scales in the Grand Form, followed by broken triads, triad chains and cadences. The back of the book finally has a scale fingering chart.
Back to the format of the regular scales though. I'll illustrate what they do with C Major, which they do for the rest of the scales. All of C Major is listed on the two pages you have open when you turn there. First there are parallel motion in octaves, followed by contrary motion starting on the same note, parallel motion in thirds or tenths, parallel motion in sixths. On the following page (which you're already opened to) they have the C Major Triads: Root Position along with the primary chords, the C Major Cadences, C Major Arpeggios, and Dominant Seventh Arpeggios. This is an excellent resource for any student pursuing understanding in piano.
I have been playing piano for several years and never have grasped such a great understanding of the instrument until purchasing this book. I find that songs come so much more easily now just as long as I practice the scales before playing. The brain is a wonderful thing, but you do need to give it some fundamentals to work with, and this book of scales are the answer.
Well worth the cost, I would've been willing to pay more for this book than the $9 I payed for it. Highly recommended.

Must have for any budding pianist

Alfred's Books have always been some of the best learning materials available. This book is no different. The book has all the scales every student should master as well as some informative information regarding music fundamentals. The book is of high quality with bright big text and is very easy on the eyes. They used quality paper and ink for this book. The paper stock is thick and sturdy so it can stand up to some abuse. The one thing I wish was included was a spiral binding. Once you get into these types of books, it becomes difficult to lay flat on the piano desk without the pages closing. Minor gripe, you can take it to Fedex office to get it binded for around $6 if it becomes too bothersome to you.

Elizabeth Pomeroy earned a B.A. at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, an M.S.W. at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. at The University of Texas at Austin. With more than 20 years of experience, Pomeroy's current teaching and research interests include clinical social work courses with a focus on mental health, health and children, and families; HIV/AIDS interventions; crime victims; interventions for offenders in the criminal justice system; and clinical social work group interventions for children, adults, and families.
