Loved the book itself, but the smell is awful.

I love the pictures and artwork of the concept artists who envisioned the film. And I loved the movie itself.
Unfortunately, the ink or some chemical that it was made with actually triggered a severe sinus headache. It needs to be totally aired out before you can actually read it. Had to put it back inside the cellophane packaging to keep it from whafting through my house. Be careful if you have allergies, (particularly chemical.) Don't know who printed these but it's just a tad toxic.

Marvel's outdone themselves.

After being beyond impressed after seeing the "Doctor Strange" movie, I couldn't resist pre-ordering this. Encased within a slipcover, the hardcover book details many of the movie's aspects such as character designs, backgrounds, and also has storyboards for one of the topsy-turvy fight scenes. Even the sling rings, which I thought were all the same, turned out to have different designs! It's readily apparent a lot of thought and effort went into crafting Strange's universe. If you enjoyed all the eye candy in the movie, I heartily recommend this book. You can't go wrong.

Empathy - appealing but elusive

Roman Krznaric offers an appealing celebration of empathy as an alternative to the increasingly egocentric, insular, atomised human experience of modernity. We are wired for empathy. His moving personal and social vignettes showcase empathy as a more attractive fulfilling way to live together in human society. There’s lots of interesting and also much morally challenging material here on subjects like prejudice, obedience to authority, distance from others, and denial of reality. His strong thesis is that empathy has reduced cruelty and torture, and can reduce inequality, injustice, conflict, and even climate change.

He doesn’t however tackle the difficulties with his thesis. Claims of ‘mirror neurons’ are unconvincing. We may just as easily react to someone else’s good or bad treatment by imagining it directly on ourselves, rather than via ‘mirror neurons’ in each person’s brain. Empathy may be reverse engineered selfishness. People’s capacity for empathy is not as infinite as Krznaric suggests or requires. Many people can’t find empathy for their own family or their immediate neighbours, never mind for the total world population. He doesn’t explore the boundary between empathy, and behaviour which is intrusive or patronising. Do we want to ‘step into other people’s lives’, and do other people want their lives stepped into? His social engineering proposals for an empathy revolution are too manipulative.

Technology increasingly makes individualism possible as lifestyle. This is unlikely to change or reverse, and resistance looks futile. Empathy may be nice, but it’s not necessary. It therefore has to make a very strong case for itself. Self is a powerful force. As Krznaric points out, other orientation is a rare capability. His own web site is egocentric and doesn’t offer any scope for engagement, as is the case with most other contemporary philosophers. A forum would be more consistent with the theme of empathy than a blog. Krznaric has told me what he thinks, but, contrary to his thesis, he hasn’t offered any channel to find out what I think.

There is a wider philosophical problem. We are urged to transfer concern from our own self to other people’s self, but it is still self which benefits. Merely swapping self interest (I’ll scratch your back if you’ll scratch mine) is a zero sum game. Having discovered someone else has a different interest or opinion to mine doesn’t necessarily resolve the dilemma. The question as to why, and how far, we should be more involved with others, more concerned with others, cannot be determined, just as justice itself cannot be absolutely defined . It is as arbitrary as any other moral imperative in an atheist interpretation. This however doesn’t prevent us choosing, in a totally arbitrary way, to prefer an empathetic society. I happen to largely agree with Roman Krznaric, but I think the debate needs to be deeper and wider.

Worthy, but less than the whole story

Krznaric is no mug. Starting with the discovery of the mirror neurone, which seems to explain how humans can be empathic, he provides a practical road map for exercising and developing one's empathic capacities. The book is easy to read, full of interesting examples, and well referenced and indexed.

I searched in vain for any reference to an explanation of just how our brain's empathic ability works--a psychology of empathy perhaps. It's surprising that Krznaric seems not to have heard of René Girard. As one reviewer here observes, mirror neurones perhaps work both selfishly and selflessly. Indeed, Girard's work explicates that.

However, the triumph of books like this one is that they help us to knock down the myth of Individualism that pervades so much of existence today. The alternative, that humans are social inter-dividual beings is becoming clearer. Whether we shall use our interdividuality for empathy, or resentment and scapegoating, depends on how well we begin to understand ourselves.

About the Author
Richard Heinberg is a Senior Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute and is widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost educators about the need to transition away from fossil fuels. He has authored twelve books, including The Party’s Over: Oil, War, and the Fate of Industrial Societies and Afterburn: Society Beyond Fossil Fuels, and scores of essays and articles that have appeared in such journals as Nature, The American Prospect, The Pacific Standard, Public Policy Research, Quarterly Review, The Ecologist, Resurgence, The Futurist, European Business Review, Earth Island Journal, Yes!, and The Sun.

David Fridley has been a staff scientist at the Energy Analysis Program at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California since 1995. He is also Deputy Group Leader of Lawrence Berkeley’s China Energy Group, which collaborates with China on end-user energy efficiency, government energy management programs, and energy policy research. Fridley has written and spoken extensively on the energy and ecological limits of biofuels and serves as Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Fellow at Post Carbon Institute.

Wind, solar etc are all good and necessary, but...we need to learn to live with less energy

A very carefully researched examination of what a complete transformation to renewable energy is likely to entail. The authors caution that we will need to emphasize energy efficiency and learn to do with less, and that we will need to avoid a number of potential pitfalls on the way to a 100% sustainable society.

The book begins by walking the reader through the basics of energy and power, and explains such concepts as EROEI and embodied energy, before turning to the different characteristics of various energy sources and such problems with renewable energy as intermittency and the need for storage, demand management, capacity redundancy and the like.

Yes, it is somewhat technical, but not overwhelmingly so, and the authors persuasively argue what some other writers such as Ozzie Zehner have been saying: we will not simply be able to swap out fossil fuels for wind and solar power. In particular, we are going to have to learn to live with substantially less energy; we are going to have to remake not only our systems for producing energy, but also for using it--in agriculture, transportation, industry, ...everything.

Along the way, the authors discuss issues that I have not seen mentioned much in the literature, but that are obviously important. Such as the need, ultimately, to manufacture sustainable energy equipment (wind turbines, solar cells, etc.) using only sustainable energy--electricity--and what this is likely to entail. The fact that our road infrastructure itself is very heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and for this and other reasons, electric cars may be a red herring where sustainability is concerned.

They are careful in stating their conclusions, but these conclusions are supported by meticulously developed and footnoted arguments. And their conclusions are riveting: if we put off the transition to renewable energy, "we eventually end up with catastrophic climate change and NO viable energy system."

I think this is may be the most important book on climate change and energy issues to appear this year. Very highly recommended.

This is the best book yet from Richard Heinberg

This is, by far, the best book yet from Richard Heinberg. It is also the most technical in content, consistent with his co-author’s background. But please don’t let that deter you from reading this book. It is quite up to date with many references from 2015.

The first two parts of this book, understanding energy and our current energy use, followed by renewable energy in a largely fossil fuel-free world, is a much more detailed report than attempted in a short book I wrote in 2014. For example, a rapid scale up of wind turbines and solar panels for renewable electricity would actually increase fossil fuel use, as materials used in wind and solar manufacturing rely on fossil fuels with no near-term alternatives.

The third part of this book is extremely important and often overlooked: preparing for a renewable energy future. The world will likely need to use less energy per capita going forward. This has profound implications for capitalism in the western world. Economic growth is not sustainable. The connection between a high level of energy use and wealth will have to change. This is inevitable with a finite supply of remaining fossil fuels. This transition will happen even if we don’t embrace it, so planning for it is of paramount importance.

Excellent book, clear, concise explanation of the problems and possible ways of of coping with them. As the author shows, there are no simple solutions and no single fix for our looming potential disaster, but there are a number of measures which collectively could see us through, provided we accept some sacrifice no for the sake of future generations. Well written by an author with long experience in the field.

The zany tone works so well that the undercurrent of sincere longing and occasional romantic tragedy can sneak up on you. Roman’s art, meanwhile, has an undeniable manga style but with the soft lines and easy charm of old-fashioned comic strips. No space-school sophomore slump

The first book was a delight: charming, funny, surreal and all about a childhood experience that I would have loved (I hated school so much, and I'm guessing classes in space tumbling and games of fireball would have improved matters). The second book is equally charming, funny and surreal. Both books are told in short story snippets that add up into a story greater than the sum of its parts. Definitely buy both books, so that you can get more enjoyment out of visiting a school that has bear-ed up security (bears with fists that double as bazookas). Marvel at the poetic entrances of Team Feety-Pajamas (a very funny though affectionate riff on a certain Pokemon villain squad). And watch the students battle against tyranny when the school "bans love and cancels fun."

Seriously, folks, this is great for all ages. A great antidote to the grim-and-gritty world of comics that have forgotten fun. The art is unique, loose and cute as all get-out. The writing is sharp. And Senor Panda (still not extinct!) is the best Spanish teacher anyone could ask for.

This book presents a wealth of information on mercury poisoning such as you might have gotten from dental amalgam fillings, laboratory accidents, occupational exposure to mercury, exposure to mercury preservatives in health care products such as eye care products and contraceptives, etc. The book discusses how to tell if you have mercury poisoning, what to do about it, how to get help, and how to deal with physicians. Much of this information is covered several times at different levels so that you can find the amount of detail that best suits you. The book is straightforward and factual. The book is a tool for solving intractable health problems.

This book need not be read cover to cover or in any particular order. Figures and tables have been included to rapidly convey how the different symptoms are interrelated and how different medicines and nutritional supplements can be used.

This book is intentionally very broad. A large number of supplements and medicines are discussed. Thus there will be SOMETHING that each individual patient's metabolism tolerates, and SOMETHING that each physician is familiar and comfortable with.

Worse, the textbooks offer no guidance on how to cure chronic mercury poisoning or control symptoms during treatment. This book gives your physician the information they need to help you.

I wrote this book because I became seriously ill while most doctors told me there was nothing wrong. After an "environmental medicine" doctor suggested I had amalgam illness I had to read lots of medical literature to figure out what was going on and what to do about it. I got better after having my fillings replaced and taking appropriate chelating agents. I also know a lot of other people to whom this happened.

I was very lucky when I got sick. Not lucky to get sick! That was a terrible experience! But I was lucky to have received exactly the right education before I needed it - close enough to medicine to be able to read physician's textbooks, but not close enough to share all the myths and be sure of the things "everyone knows." I was lucky to have had some business experience so I viewed physicians as professional service providers and knew how to get the services I needed from them. I had the right political experience to realize I could get lots of valuable information by just talking to enough people, but that certain things had to be learned by reading books.

I didn't only learn how to get better. I also learned how much people suffer from this terrible condition. I learned how poorly understood mercury poisoning is. I wrote this book so that other people don't have to do all their own detective work when they get sick. So that people could start with the best information I could find. So that future victims of mercury poisoning won't have to suffer unnecessarily because nobody really knows what to do. I wrote this book to help you get well.

Sometimes it takes the doctors a while to figure out what is causing a disease. Until recently it was believed that ulcers were entirely psychosomatic. Ulcer sufferers underwent prolonged treatment, were seldom cured, and often ended up under the surgeon's knife. It is now known that most ulcers are due to helicobacter pylorii infection, and ulcers easily cured.

Lyme disease is a fascinating story. A housewife fell ill. Her symptoms were considered psychosomatic. When her husband and children came down with similar problems, this was regarded as some kind of projection of her psychosomatic complaint. She was eventually able to convince a physician that the only crazy thing was assuming that something psychosomatic could be contagious! Once the doctor gave them medicine they got better.

Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome is still routinely considered a psychiatric disorder despite the repeated publication of physical and laboratory abnormalities always found in victims of it. People who realize it's not "Yuppie flu" find treatments that help them get better. A lot of these are covered in this book since CFIDS is often caused by unrecognized mercury poisoning and I had a terrible time with it.

In less recent times, another form of mercury poisoning - acrodynia, or pink disease in babies - was endemic for 150 years until physicians recognized mercury as the causal agent. The disease was eliminated and all the babies got better by changing the formulation of infant care products that used to include mercury.

This book is the kind of book you'd expect a chemist to write - one that is mechanistic, interrelated, and views the body as a complex chemical factory to be measured and controlled by adding a bit of the right reagent over here, taking something out over there, and sprinkling on "magic pixie dust" where needed. This isn't the only way to understand things. It is just the way I knew how to explain them.

Progress in medicine is sometimes slow due to people's natural tendency to hold on to the old theories they learned in school. Medical school professors can be a bit dogmatic about the need to adhere to the theories they lecture on so authoritatively. It takes a while for what ordinary doctors see day after day in their clinics to get applied creatively to making people better, and even longer for this information to make it back into medical school lectures. I hope I have given you the best of both worlds in this book - a description of what actually happens to real people when they encounter mercury, instead of the theoretical response the average man is projected to have from what happens to little mice and rats in medical school experiments.

I've written this book according to a modern paradigm of medicine. This new paradigm consists of viewing the human body as a system where biochemistry leads to metabolism which in turn becomes physiology. The new paradigm is to see disease as a slow progression from health to death rather than the sudden onset of a "disease" once a certain number of symptoms occur. The new paradigm lets you use the best of both mainstream and alternative medicine to get well.

The Hardest times are the proof. The truth is the shortcut.

I ordered this book after 3 years of going to doctors to try to figure out my health issues: Hashimoto's thyroiditis, infertility, estrogen dominance, fatigue, hypertrophic bladder, depression, hypo manic, etc...
My whole life was falling apart. I'm a nurse, so I won't quit my vigilance.
I met a woman at the Vitamin store who said she has Hashimoto's due to her mother's amalgam fillings, and she was taking supplements to help. I dismissed her as crazy, but my health continued to decline as did my memory. At the time I was taking a supplement called ALA without knowing the half-life or that taking it with the amalgams in my mouth would cause catastrophic health. Eventually, the tooth next to my amalgam bore a hole due to the ALA trying to pull the metals out of my tooth. My health plummeted to an ultimate low.
I'm grateful for Dr. Cutler. I found the Mercury Detox Support Group on FB and he had just joined that week, as well!
For the people who write in these reviews about his negative personality, they are expecting that a man who has a PhD in chemistry, who also became ill be the utmost respectable person. Drop your expectations. Ultimately, he is a human being and he will not hide his strong emotions. That is what I call a "real" doctor. As a nurse, I have learned the most from those types.
No politics, no holds barred doctors!!
My health: Marked improvements: Improved memory, energy, mood, etc...
Give yourself a chance and do not give up, because every tiny improvement or step back will teach you something. You have to do as he says! He really isn't writing this book as a fad, so you cannot pick and choose! Also, he tells you how to talk to your doctor which is very important. Most medical professionals were taught a program, so they literally need you to be your own advocate.
Have a realistic outlook, this is hard work, but life is hard work and you may experience many bumps during this healing, but that is by no means a reason to blame Dr. Cutler. This is a challenge that will teach you so much. Embrace it.
Real health is hard, period.

I had amalgams in me for 15 years and those years were hell. I was extremely ill as I had bought this new high speed electric toothbrush . Incidentally it caused a lot of mercury to come out of my fillings as I believe the fillings got polished and the layer of tarnish that built over the years got removed. For a 30 year old I had tingling in my hands and feet ,numbness in my limbs and total loss of memory. Fortunately my sister had read some place about the amalgam contorversey and when she mentioned it I quickly knew what was wrong. The claims of the dentist and authorities about their safety didnt help. I am an engineer and I know how wrong mercury can be for you, unfortunately I didnt know this when they put it inside me. I ordered the book by Hal Huggins ' Its all in your head' (You need this to know how they should remove the mercury safely), searched a dentist who could remove the mercury safely for me. I could already feel better after my amalgam removal. Unfortunately I had metal screws in me from a previous fracture in the leg, so I did not start chelation rightaway. No doctor will ever tell u that no matter what, do not ever get a metal inside you, they always leach. My screws were stainless steel, my hair test results showed high nickel which I know is a component of steel. 3 months after amalam removal I scheduled a surgery for screw removal. 2 months of juicing and supplementation to get healthy before starting chelation. This month I started the AC chelation protocol, have completed 2 rounds with DMSA, and already feel so fabulous. It took me 8 months after amalgam removel to get to this stage. I had blood work done at the peak of my toxicity last year, so this year I am again waiting for my annual check up to see figures change. I feel the brain fog is reducing, I have so much energy. My healing would have been slow without this book. I dont know if I would ever lose my brain fog without chelation. I was getting better slowly but chelation with AC protocol is giving fast results. This has showed at work too, my boss feels I have been really performing well lately . I seem to have the brightest ideas and fixes for any problem. Little does he or anyone know about my heros - Dr Andy Cutler, Dr Hal Huggins. Defnitely recommend this book!

If only I had found this book sooner! I have terrible mercury toxicity (confirmed by hair analysis) and tried several detoxing/chelation methods that did alot of damage that I am still recovering from. This book would have warned me in advance not to do those things. It isn't the best written or organized book in the world but all the information is there! I haven't even been able to start chelating the mercury yet, but I have implemented some of the supplement recommendations and am starting to feel a little better. My mercury exposure was severe. From amalgam fillings as a child (and incorrect removal of them), to allergy and flu shots, to vaccinations, and even playing with a broken thermometer. I was doomed to life-long illness from a very young age. This book gives me hope that eventually I will be ok. I don't even know what I would do without it! This book is worth ten times the cost!

In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters.

Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead."

There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word.

So how do you review one of the most remarkable tomes you've ever had the pleasure of opening? You just turn each page and allow yourself to be swept away by each story. You soak up the simple tales that read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the series; you follow every dip and curve of Rowling's handwriting and revel in every detail that makes the book unique--a slight darkening of a letter here, a place where the writing nearly runs off the page there. Why We Love Harry: Our Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition. "Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur’s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling’s most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley’s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

* The revelation of Snape's nature (especially Snape’s Patronus and the emotion behind it). It serves as a reminder that it is love (requited or not) in all its forms that drives many of our actions.
* Harry asking if the conversation with Dumbledore was real or happening in his head, and Dumbledore responding "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"
* Ron gifting Harry a book on dating witches, a subtle reminder that they are still teens, after all.

Grade 4 Up—Muggles grow up with Grimm's fairy tales; wizarding children grow up with Tales of Beedle the Bard. The Bard's book is a collection of five tales, bequeathed to Hermione Granger by Professor Dumbledore. The passing of the book into her hands was intended to be both "entertaining and instructive." As in all good mysteries, information contained within its pages provided Hermione with clues essential to helping Harry in the series' last installment. In particular, "The Tale of Three Brothers" describes how three magical items appeared after siblings cleverly cheat death. It is these items that play a pivotal role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Scholastic, 2007). Those hoping to re-create the hours of pleasure spent curled up with a J.K. It is easy to be cynical about The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Harry Potter fans may see it as a inadequate substitute for the delayed release of the film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Muggles—you ordinary, nonmagical humans—may wonder why another Hogwarts book is necessary, even if one of the stories in this collection, "The Tale of the Three Brothers," plays an important role in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort (in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). But critics found much in this book for even nonfans to admire—from the subtle moral messages of the tales to the voice which Rowling allows to emerge in the tongue-in-cheek commentaries. A few critics commented that the collection lacks Rowling's usual charm and originality, but most fans will be happy to have a few more moments with Dumbledore.

My only complaint: I wanted more

If you love the Harry Potter series, then this is a must-have. It arrived in the mail yesterday, and I devoured it right away. And that's my only complaint: it's brevity. It's a short, quick read. But a fun one.
And it's not simply a handful of fairy tales from the wizarding world. The commentary by Albus Dumbledore on each story was a really nice touch, in some cases even more entertaining to me than the stories themselves.
If you were expecting a thick book that would absorb you for hours as the Harry Potter series did, I hope you're not disappointed in this book's brevity. It's still worth the price if you enjoy the series, and it supports a charitable cause.
If you've never read the Harry Potter books (or seen the movies, I suppose) then do NOT consider this a sample of the series. You will not glean any sense of the depth, quality and, as everyone else calls it, the magic of the Harry Potter world. This book is a tasty dessert to those who've feasted on the seven-course series.

Pretty Good

The book was decent, in a cutesy kind of way. It is a very quick read -- somewhere around 100 pages. Being in my twenties, I think I was probably a little older than the intended audience. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter series, but with one caveat: Don't get your hopes up too high. It's good and provides some insight into "The Deathly Hallows," but it's no Harry Potter.

The Collectors Edition is a Must Have

A short while ago I opened my door to find a large package from Amazon: I could not believe it was actually my copy of The Collectors Edition of the Tales of Beedle the Bard! While I first ordered this a while ago, there was a problem with my credit card and I had to reorder, so I did not think I would get this book at all, much less on the relealse date! Thank you Amazon, I don't know how you do it!

The book is an absolutely must have for every Harry Potter fan. I had already read the tales themselves when I opened this volume, and they are truly delightful and full of wonderful messages for our children (and for all the magic lovers among us). The stories aside, this edition is truly beautiful and a pleasure to hold in one's hand. There are some wonderful and unique features to it -- the set of reprints is just beautiful; the small book inside the velvet bag inside the larger volume makes you feel like you are opening a treasure and indeed you are!

I bought this volume for my son for a Christmas present, but now I'm thinking, maybe I will need another one! It is well worth the money to own such a special item, and it makes it that much greater that a portion of the proceeds goes to Ms. Rowling's incredible charity. I know the holidays are going to be very special in my house. Thank you Ms. Rowling, for yet another gift to your legions of fans.
